Monday morning practice notes and observations

Drew Parent and I were down at Owls practice earlier this morning. It was the first practice of preseason camp that saw the team in full pads.

We were able to catch a good portion of the 11-on-11 drill the Owls ran. Some quick observations:

- The standout performer of the day, at least in my opinion, was freshman running back Ryquell Armstead. He was all over the field this morning. At one point, he took a screen pass from P.J. Walker and broke it off for a big gain. Later on, he took a handoff, broke through the left side of the line and scampered into the endzone from about 20 yards out. Needless to say, he was impressive. The running back competition during camp is going to be interesting.

- True freshman Logan Marchi, redshirt freshman Frank Nutile and redshirt sophomore Tim DiGiorgio all rotated in as the second-team quarterback as the battle to be Walker's backup continued. Marchi had a couple of nice runs on draw plays. Nutile underthrew Sam Benjamin on a deep post, but Benjamin adjusted and made the grab for a big gain. Expect that rotation to continue throughout camp.

- The defense laid a few big hits. Nate L. Smith leveled Brandon Shippen with a hit on an out route. Tavon Young also sized up Benjamin with a big hit at one point.

- Redshirt freshman running back David Hood left toward the end of practice with what appeared to be cramping issues. It didn't seem too serious.

- Thanks in part to a Matt Ioannidis recovery of a fumbled snap and an Alex Wells interception of a tipped pass at the goal line, the defense was declared the day's winner.

Today was a defense day for media availability. We were able to catch up with defensive coordinator Phil Snow, Tyler Matakevich, Tavon Young and Praise Martin-Oguike and will have the audio of those interviews up ASAP.

Those of you who have heard a Phil Snow interview before know he can be a great quote. Today was no exception. Very much recommend checking his interview out when we get it posted.

Windows 10 issues?

Is anyone else having problems with the new Windows 10? I upgraded my laptop to W10 a few days ago, and the only problems I've had with it thus far have been on Owlscoop. The first time I logged on here after the upgrade, I got a prompt to re-register. That wasn't particularly surprising. But yesterday when I was on here, after I had read a few threads and posted a couple of comments, I unexpectedly got bounced to the page where I had to re-register again. This time, it came with a request to change my password. I did so, and the screen indicated "password changed", but from that point on, I could not view any threads or post, and logging out and logging back in was unsuccessful, as the system would not accept either the old or the new password. I guess I'm OK now because I'm viewing and posting, but I got in because there was a "reply to watched thread" alert in my e-mail inbox, and I clicked on the "view this thread" link in that e-mail. I don't know if I'll encounter any problems if I try to log in through the "usual" method.

HARRY MOORE

Don't know if it's the former Gratz star who was a teammate of Aaron McKie and Rasheed Wallace, but he got busted for fraud in connection with a property on my old street in West Oak Lane. Moore was shot during a drive-by in high school, was arrested for armed robbery back in 2002. He's had a rough go.

6-8 kid who went to St. Bonaventure.

The day temple basketball died...

http://mobile.philly.com/blogs/?wss=/philly/blogs/rally/&id=320503852&

We were on life support the last 2 years. We officially died today. If you think this is bad, keep your eyes and ears closed during the 2017 recruiting class when the local talent is even stronger than this years crop.

"The pipeline from Broad and Vine to State College continues"

“Pat Chambers is working hard, getting a lot of the area’s top players,” Roman Catholic coach Chris McNesby said.

“Coach Chambers got to know me, my girlfriend, my entire family,” Carr said.

“Coach Dunphy is great,” he said. “I just wanted to get away, expand my horizons a bit, start something new. I think we can do something special at Penn State.”

Roster updates, news on Gilmore, Dvoracek, Thrift

Running back Jamie Gilmore, I was told today, will look to graduate from Temple and finish his career elsewhere, most likely at an FCS program.

Linebacker Rob Dvoracek has retired from football due to his knee injury and will be with the team as a student assistant coach, like Buddy Brown. It's a tough break for Dvoracek, who dealt with an infection following his knee injury. He's a nice kid and a solid player.

Defensive lineman Brenon Thrift, some of you have seen, is now at Lackawanna. He was dismissed from the program.

Preseason camp coverage: What to expect

So today marked the first day of media availability at Temple's preseason camp, and I just wanted to outline how we'll be approaching our camp coverage.

What we'll generally be doing is posting interviews not long after we get them. On some occasions, we'll be able to transcribe all or part of them and on others, we won't. We just want to get the content out there as quickly and as frequently as possible. So right now, we have today's interviews with Matt Rhule, P.J. Walker, Adonis Jennings and Robby Anderson, who spoke to the media for the first time since returning to the program.

Greg Paone talked to freshman safety Jeremiah Atoki and Drew Parent talked to freshman running back Ryquell Armstead, so we'll have interviews and stories from them as well.

The next media availability session is Monday, when defensive coordinator Phil Snow and his players will be available.
