Temple Football Outreach and Social Media

Did Keeler bring in his own person or people to run the Temple football social media? It has been run about as good as I have seen for any Temple sport (I know the bar isn’t particularly high). There is at least one new post a day, regular videos from spring camp and season tickets are regularly promoted. In addition, there has been more media exposure locally (which isn’t surprising with how the program has struggled).

This seems like a good idea as well:

I know the football program needs to win games to elevate the program again but hopefully Keeler figures that out as he seems to get it around recruiting (focusing on the footprint) and promoting the team.

Hard to believe

It's really hard to believe that there are 64 teams in the NCAA, 32 in the NIT, 16 in the Crown and no Temple. There are 112 college basketball programs more desirable for post season play. This is not mediocrity, this is downright disgraceful. And talk of giving a coach several seasons to build no longer holds given the portal. Look at St. John's with a first year coach, and there are so many others. Either go all out and produce a team worthy of fan interest or call it a day. Our new President and Board need to have some serious discussions. This just can't continue.

When you’re bleeding out..

You cut off the limb to save the body.
It is time to drop football. And it pains me that I have finally come to this conclusion.
Aside from a few good years under Rhule, Golden, and perhaps Arians before that Temple football is largely a dumpster fire that has sucked resources from the university with no return - largely due to strategic mismanagement.
The majority of Temple people resonate with basketball and that’s always been our core culture and DNA and has carried our brand nationally. It can become a major strategic asset.
If we save it!
We have to save basketball. Cut football. Pump all money into basketball that you can and all donations we get go to it.
If we continue to split our resources rather than invest in our core business we will be bankrupt totally and embarrassed more than we already are.

A solution for college sports

This is taken from an article on fooballscoop.com It was in an article interviewing the football coach at Grambling . The NCAA erred when they discouraged rather than encouraged the players to unionize. All of this could be collectively bargained.. Agents who represent the players would have to be licensed by the union. Promises of money to players would be in the form of a written contract; It could be for 1-4 years. A player wishing to leave would have to pay a buyout, just like coaches. This, of course, would all be collectively bargained. Players would have the right to strike. Amateurism in an environment of billion-dollar TV deals is out-model. This is pro sports, like it or not. It's just all above board. In-season tampering with players, which is now rampant, would be subject to several penalties, i.e, loss of roster spots..

Still, though, the NCAA argues that still does not make them employees. With employment comes collective bargaining, which brings certain protections (both to the employee and the employer) that make it more difficult for each side to break their respective agreements and compensates the injured party when those pacts are broken. I.e., buyouts.

John Fry Investiture 4/4/25

Did anyone attend? Heard Fry announced the schools largest donation by the Kimmels at $28mil for the new Klein building. Also heard Fry is busy trying to keep the school afloat right now and athletics are far from a top priority, because of that. Apparently “athletics announcements are coming” from a friend that spent time with Fry this week, but didn’t say what that entailed.

He states that this is the first time that he was excited and that “John Fry knows everyone” when we talked about the lack of donors. He said he’s the smartest person he knows, he’s motivated, and that the future looks right for the university as a whole. “Things will change”.

Stay tuned I guess.

The TUFF Fund

Good morning Owl fans:

As many of you know, the TUFF Fund was formed in the fall, with hopes of modernizing Temple Athletics through NIL. Over the past several months, we've signed over a dozen student-athletes, including all eligible Men's Basketball players.

We've decided to join OwlScoop so that we can provide information and resources directly to the most ardent and passionate Temple fans. We'll occasionally provide updates, whether it be signings, fundraising opportunities, events, or charitable initiatives that our student-athletes are involved with over the course of the year. We'll also answer questions to the best of our ability and within the guidelines of the NCAA and state of Pennsylvania.

I believe I'm preaching to the choir when I express how vitally important NIL is to the success of an athletics program. While it's been a slow build, I think that we are trending in a positive direction as a whole.

And while it's probably poor bedside manner to ask for something out of the chute, we currently have a donor who has graciously offered to match all funds up to $10,000 by the tip off on Sunday versus Houston. If you have the ability to do so, and many have already done so since it's gone live yesterday, please consider contributing. Our continued ability to demonstrate to the administration and the BOT that there is interest and a propensity to give to NIL will go a long way.

Taking mailbag questions until 2 p.m. tomorrow (Wednesday)

Hello. It's been another eventful week for Temple hoops.

If you have mailbag questions for this week's episode of The Scoop, we're taking them until 2 p.m. tomorrow (Wednesday.) I put Wednesday in parentheses because I'm mindful that some of you might see this thread for the first time tomorrow and think you have another day to get your question in.

Nevertheless, for all the Succession fans out there, "We hear .... for you."
