This week's podcast

Good morning, everyone. I posted this on the hoops board and wanted to share it here, too.

If I can record a podcast this week, it probably will not be until Thursday night or Friday morning. I'm heading out of town today for a funeral and won't be back until tomorrow night. So no mailbag this week, but we'll have one next week.

I do have some audio from my conversations with Maddux Trujillo, Gevani McCoy and Masiah Gilyard that I'd like to share, so I'll see if I can put something together in the next couple days.

Thanks for your patience.

The TUFF Fund

Good morning Owl fans:

As many of you know, the TUFF Fund was formed in the fall, with hopes of modernizing Temple Athletics through NIL. Over the past several months, we've signed over a dozen student-athletes, including all eligible Men's Basketball players.

We've decided to join OwlScoop so that we can provide information and resources directly to the most ardent and passionate Temple fans. We'll occasionally provide updates, whether it be signings, fundraising opportunities, events, or charitable initiatives that our student-athletes are involved with over the course of the year. We'll also answer questions to the best of our ability and within the guidelines of the NCAA and state of Pennsylvania.

I believe I'm preaching to the choir when I express how vitally important NIL is to the success of an athletics program. While it's been a slow build, I think that we are trending in a positive direction as a whole.

And while it's probably poor bedside manner to ask for something out of the chute, we currently have a donor who has graciously offered to match all funds up to $10,000 by the tip off on Sunday versus Houston. If you have the ability to do so, and many have already done so since it's gone live yesterday, please consider contributing. Our continued ability to demonstrate to the administration and the BOT that there is interest and a propensity to give to NIL will go a long way.

Temple Football Outreach and Social Media

Did Keeler bring in his own person or people to run the Temple football social media? It has been run about as good as I have seen for any Temple sport (I know the bar isn’t particularly high). There is at least one new post a day, regular videos from spring camp and season tickets are regularly promoted. In addition, there has been more media exposure locally (which isn’t surprising with how the program has struggled).

This seems like a good idea as well:

I know the football program needs to win games to elevate the program again but hopefully Keeler figures that out as he seems to get it around recruiting (focusing on the footprint) and promoting the team.

Gevani McCoy interview

I talked to Temple's new quarterback about an hour ago. I'm heading out of town for the next day, but I'll have a story up soon.

A few excerpts and notes from our conversation:

McCoy said programs like UNLV and Kent State reached out when he hit the portal, but Temple was the first. As Kyle first reported, he came in for a visit Monday and Tuesday of this week.

What sold him on Temple?

" I sat and and talked with my dad, and we just talked with the staff, and sat there and watched plays for just for some time and and it seems like a really good fit," he told me. "So just from there, I would say that we knew that's where we wanted to be."

McCoy said he was familiar with Tyler Walker's work from when McCoy and Idaho played against Montana State back in 2023, a game Montana State won, 24-21.. McCoy went 22 of 29 passing for two touchdowns in that game while Tommy Mellott, the player he watched on film this week, went 12 of 24 for two touchdowns. So when McCoy and his father watched film with Walker and K.C. Keeler earlier this week, it was kind of a full-circle moment.

McCoy, as I'm sure you all know by now, put up some big numbers at Idaho and was a Walter Payton Award finalist in 2023. He got off to a solid start this past season at Oregon State, leading the Beavers to wins in four of their first five games. He threw for 147 yards and ran for 91 yards and three touchdowns in a 39-31, double overtime win over Colorado State back on Oct. 5, but he wasn't the same after sustaining a shoulder injury in that game and eventually lost the starting job.

"It's all a part of the game, and it all comes with the with the position that I play," McCoy said when I asked him about the ups and downs of this past season. "I know what I signed up for. There's been a lot of good times. There's been a few lows, but that's all a part of it."
