Nick Sharga

Matt Rhule was asked about walk-on Nick Sharga today during the American coaches teleconference. Sharga won one of the last two single-digit numbers last week in practice, and he's a walk-on from Northampton High School and a transfer from West Virginia Wesleyan.

Rhule and the coaches have typically had high praise for Sharga, who stood out during the spring game, and today Rhule described Sharga as the team's backup middle linebacker and someone who could also be a fullback in goal line situations, so there's another name to throw in the mix when it comes time to talking about a potential fullback.

The Scoop podcast is back!

We're reviving The Scoop, a podcast we did several years ago, and we'll be recording our first episode today. Once we get everything up and running, we'll hopefully be on iTune or TuneIn.

Each podcast will have conversation about the usual stuff - football, basketball and recruiting, along with in-season preview and matchup talk. Jamie Gray, one of our new interns, will be on board with us to facilitate the conversation.

Each week, we'll feature a mailbag segment in which we answer your questions, so feel free to post them here and we'll also advertise this on Twitter as well.

There's obviously a lot to talk about this week between the kickoff of the football season and a couple of prominent basketball recruits being on campus recently in Alani Moore and Sedee Keita. We hope to have the podcast posted first on the site later this week, so stay tuned.

ESPN3

ESPN today announced the launch of ESPN College Extra, a new college sports service that will bring hundreds of ESPN3 exclusive live college sports events to TV.

Hopefully the UMASS game is shown on this. Verizon is included in the companies offering this but Comcast is not. However, the linked article says any additional providers will be announced going forward.

depth chart omissions

There were numerous omissions of players who have been given positive press over the past year. Since there is always a veil of secrecy around injuries that might explain some of the names. On offense names that pop out are T.J Simmons,Brandon Shippen, Derrick Thomas,Kiser Terry and Jovahn Fair .Also Brian Carter listed as RS freshman. Is that right? On defense notable names include Brandon Chudnoff, Artrel Foster,Anthony Davis, Hassan Reddick, and Wm Updegrove.Any info that I have missed on these players would be appreciated.

A few more notes to pass along

- There's no media availability today, only because the team is lifting and not practicing due to the first day of classes. Tomorrow's availability will be with Phil Snow and the defensive players and Friday will be Marcus Satterfield and the offensive players. Then next Monday, Matt Rhule starts his weekly press conferences with the American Athletic Conference teleconference, and next Tuesday will be his first weekly presser at Temple leading up to the Penn State game.

- On Saturday, we did see some kicking. Not all of it, I'd like to stress, but some of it. Tyler Mayes missed wide right on a 37-yard attempt, Austin Jones hit a 40-yarder, then Mayes converted from 37 and Jim Cooper hit a 37-yarder. Alex Starzyk still looks a little inconsistent punting the ball.

- An official depth chart will be released a week from today heading into the week of the Penn State game.

Divine Lorraine

Many interesting observations in this story. The one that struck me is how much younger (than me) people are interested in living in, and around, this building:

I know it is not about football, and is front page Philly.com, yet this building clearly is a linchpin in the development of the corridor from city hall up through Temple. When completed and in use it will affect the university for the better. Someday, Philadelphia's true Champs Elysses.

Power 5 school stipend

Does anyone know if this pertains to basketball student athletes as well? I saw an article today about Jordan Lucas the PSU football safety (one-time TU commit) mentioned how beneficial it will be able to "buy my mom something nice" with the extra $4,000+ they receive per year (starts this year). PSU has the highest stipend in the BigTen, and they mentioned that the stipend will likely increase. Franklin mentioned how it's a huge recruiting tool for him. If basketball gets the same stipend it doesn't take an idiot to realize how Chambers will be telling every philly kid how they could potentially get paid close to $20,000 during their 4 years. Lamar Stevens might be next.
