Rod Carey talked on today's American Athletic Conference teleconference about the statuses of cornerback Linwood Crump and wide receiver Randle Jones, both of whom have been out with injuries since the season opener against Bucknell. Crump was incorrectly listed on last Thursday's participation report and did not play.
Both players, Carey said, could ultimately redshirt, but that's a decision that doesn't have to be made at any certain time and is fluid as the season progresses.
"I don't think we'll really address that," Carey told me when I asked him about Jones. "There's always a chance, right? But you've got to get healthy first and then you've got to see when that occurs, and then you kind of plug all that in. And certainly some of those conversations have started already. Randle and I are on the same page about it and we'll just go forward as we see."
As for Crump, he did practice today, Carey said.
"I think we're getting a lot closer to his return, and then we go ahead," Carey said. "And when he's ready to go - Linwood and I have obviously talked and we're on the same page as well - we'll address that as needed when he gets back. But really, until he gets back, it's not a question to completely (answer.) Because you can say, OK, yeah, let's redshirt, and then you get a bunch of guys dinged and then you're not redshirting. And then you could say you're not redshirting and then he never gets back and then all of a sudden, it's a redshirt. So it's not something to go ahead and really answer until we're back and healthy."
Cornerback Ty Mason, a player who could ultimately provide some depth without Crump in the lineup, did not make the trip to ECU Thursday night. Carey said it was due to an injury.
"He's working his way back and hopefully we'll see him on the practice field here this week and he'll be ready to go," Carey said.
