The Scoop: Mailbag questions

We're recording another episode tomorrow. We will break down Temple's loss against USF this past Sunday and have a mini postgame segment following Temple's game at USF tomorrow, that we will include in this week's podcast. We will also answer any mailbag questions you may have, so feel free to send them here. Thanks for listening and supporting the podcast and the site. Have a great evening!

Potential Bigs for Next Season or Beyond

Might as well start a thread on this. Let's have some fun. We obviously will be looking to the portal for any bigs and unlikely to recruit any big w talent out of HS. These are just guesses at this point- maybe bigs in major conferences that are unhappy with playing time, players succeeding in lower level conf, etc that are not in the portal yet but. . .

I'll start with 6'11 Santi Aldama at Loyola MD. He was the MVP for U18 Europe playing for Spain. In 2 years at Loyola he can score, rebound, block shots, and stretch the floor by shooting 3s. Mckie would love a big to stretch the floor. He is one of the leading scorers, rebounders, and shot blockers in the Patriot league. He's intriguing but not sure if he could do the dirty work in the AAC. Time will tell.

Brandon Sanders

I could be missing something, but I don’t see him listed as a commit. Is he still committed to the program?

Obviously the roster is in need of bigs that can play. I realize that Sanders is a project, but I don’t hear any rumors of serious interest from any high school C/PFs. I am expecting/hoping McKie can grab a transfer

Curse of Dunphy

After Dunphy ruined our basketball program, we demoted him up to Athletic Director! And, here are the results...

WORST ACADEMIC YEAR OVERALL WINNING % OF OUR TWO MAJOR MENS SPORTS FOOTBALL + BASKETBALL

1958 - Football 0-8 and MBB 6-19... for an overall winning % of 0.182
2020 - Football 1-6 and MBB 4-10... for an overall winning % of 0.238 (Dunphy AD)
2013 - Football 2-10 and MBB 9-22... for an overall winning % of 0.256 (Dunphy MBB)
2006 - Football 1-11 and MBB 12-18... for an overall winning % of 0.310 (Dunphy MBB)

It's embarrassing.

I swear when I go back to a Temple sporting event next if they play the "Greatness Doesn't Quit" bullshit I'm going to be triggered. GET A MIRROR! Please.

My apologies to anyone I tried to suggest to that we shouldn't care. This is awful.

M.J. Griffin

As we get closer to the start of spring ball, which is still TBD, here's a glimpse of Temple's future. Some good stuff here regarding M.J.'s relationship with Amir Tyler.

Mid-year roster additions/subtractions

Tomorrow is the start of Temple's spring semester and Temple's roster has been updated to reflect the following additions.

Amad Anderson - WR from Purdue
Ali Barkley - RB from Whitehall HS (PA) (Walk-on, brother of Saquon Barkley)
Ra'von Bonner - RB from Illinois
Iverson Clement - RB from Florida
DeJuan Danbridge - Safety from Robert Morris (Walk-on)
Xach Gill - DT from North Carolina
Coleman Jeffcoat - TE from Mallard Creek HS (NC)
Keshaun Jones - OL from Centralia HS (IL)
Dwan Mathis - QB from Georgia
Connor Noble - TE from Downingtown East (PA) (Walk-on, son of former Temple DL coach Brandon Noble)
Keyshawn Paul - CB from UConn
TJ Pergine - QB from Millersville (Walk-on)
Will Rodgers - DE from Washington State
Jalen Satchell - DL from The Avalon School (MD)
Lancine Turay - DT from North Carolina
Matty Vitale - QB from Temple (Walk-on, Vitale was previously on the team and spent the 2020 season as a student coach)

Furthermore, the following players have been removed from the roster. This doesn't include previously announced guys like Branden Mack, Dan Archibong and the transfers.

Kimere Brown - CB
Willie Erdman - WR (Walk-on)
Eric Kiewlak - WR (Walk-on)
Will Leyland - P (Walk-on)
Thomas Mattioni - WR (Walk-on)
Leon Pinto - OL (Walk-on)
Boaz Pogue - BUBO (Walk-on)

Of the above, I'd say that Brown and Pinto are the only serious losses, as both had started games in the past, but both were projected to be back-ups in their sixth year of eligibility. Leyland had a potential future at punter but would have been behind Adam Barry for the next two seasons.

Transfers

The current roster has a plethora of perimeter players and we have 3 more coming in next year. We’re really in need of some interior players and I think the transfer market will be our best bet. Guys like TThweatt and Lance Ware both have struggled their freshmen season. Maybe both guys will be patient and wait their turn but if not these are two guys I’m sure coach Mckie would have great interest in.

Coach Arians fondest memory

Coach Arians was interviewed this week by AL.com. The story starts out asking him about Bear Bryant's comments to him when he took the Temple coaching job. Coach Arians quickly moves on to what he learned from Coach Chaney. But the story ends with the following:

“The Temple days are still my fondest memories,” Arians said. “Beating Pitt (in 1984) is the No. 1 win in my career. When we beat Pitt for the first time in 45 years, it ranks above the Super Bowl trophies I have in my house.”

Who's responsible to keep track of scoring?

When Barry made a three point shot he was only credited with a two. I assumed that at some point someone on the staff would have the ref's review the shot. The announcers showed a replay a few minutes after the shot commenting on his shooting skills. He was clearly 8 inches behind the line. Nobody seemed to notice that he was credited with a two. Our score went from 10 to 12. Granted, it didn't matter the way the game played out.

LG3

I’ve read a lot about folks saying there is no way this will happen.

That may be so, but hopefully not Nova either !!!
24/7 has him listed as 100% Villanova. How does this happen that another legacy recruit potentially goes to Nova with Aaron McKie as our damn head coach. If Aaron can’t keep Philly kids at home, who the hell can?
