Monday Notebook

Thanks for getting that posted on what should be your day off…;)

A few thoughts: (1) nervousness usually means unprepared (2) I hate “lower-body injuries - week to week” responses. That’s code for high ankle sprain; 4-6 weeks (3) Defense was on the field too much and defended some short fields…really? I hadn’t noticed (4) special teams are just that - special.

I’m nervous about Akron now and the line is Temple -6.5….

Strategic Options

Sometimes the hardest things for businesses to do is consider harvesting or divesting assets that no longer have a useful life. Usually managers are faced with choices, none of them favorable…
1. Continue to throw good money after bad, understanding market share will continue to erode; aka kicking the can down the road
2. Try to reinvent yourself… rebrand, vertically integrate, reduce head count… these typically always fail as you just can’t keep pace with existing or emerging competitors
3. Acquire new assets to grow yourself out of the issue… brings in new talent or sales, but the culture that got you into the mess will probably kill the new organization
4. The hardest one to do…. STOP. That’s right; understand your place in the world; understand you made poor decisions in the past, and decide to move on and that precious resources are best used elsewhere and can perhaps lead to new innovations

Of course, these problems are not just exclusive to business. Universities, and their athletic departments face them too. I give credit to UConn for making a bold decision. It takes a lot of courage. I’m sure Temple leadership is wrangling with these now too; question is…Which path do we choose? If we ask ourselves the painful questions, are options 1-3 really ever achievable? I’m starting to think option 4 is most viable. So explain to me why I’m wrong.

Serious question with two very plausible scenarios. For me, asking this question is a therapeutic exercise where I set myself up to be happy regardless of outcome Saturday.

Jaleel Davis-Shabazz talks to OwlScoop.com about his Temple offer

@Cayden Steele talked to Archbishop Wood High School cornerback Jaleel Davis-Shabazz about his Temple offer, his first from a Division I program.

It may take a decade to overcome the hiring of this coaching staff. After having the program moving 'Forward' in recent years, here we go again.
We've returned to the old days, not the good ole days either.
Football season is just a sign that basketball isn't far off ... just like it used to be.
Single Digit uniforms are "given out" instead of "Earned".
Fundamentals are lacking. Blocking and Tackling aren't being taught.
An overall 'Wuss' mentality is projected.
Coaching staff can't make decisions and live with them. For instance, they don't know who the backup QB is ... everybody is 'above the line'.
Just sayin .....

How Temple Should Stand as a Warning to the Rest of the AAC

Article:

Wow. Just came across this one on Twitter… written last March.
Whomever thought stability was better than growth ought to be fired (oh wait… he left for BC and Englert retired! Great!). I have worked in many organizations where we had young up and comers who left after a few years, and we wore that as a badge of honor that we were an excellent exporter of talent, which meant we were doing something right.

Athletic Director Search Update

It's been more than 13 months since Fran Dunphy was named Temple's acting athletic director after Pat Kraft left for Boston College but it seems like things are finally kicking off in the search for Kraft's permanent replacement. OwlScoop.com can confirm, as first reported by CollegeAD.com, that Temple has selected Korn Ferry as the search firm to find the next AD. This bucks the trend of using TurnKey, which Kraft frequently used to find new head coaches.

Beyond what CollegeAD has reported, OwlScoop.com can also report that Korn Ferry has started the process and will conduct interviews with current Temple employees this week. The purpose of these internal interviews is less about finding an internal candidate and more about getting a better idea of the type of candidate that would work at Temple.

Furthermore, a panel has been convened by the Board of Trustees to solicit input from both external and internal stakeholders in regards to their interactions with the athletic department and which traits they see as important for the next AD. This panel was aided by Kenneth Shopshire, who previously served as the Director of the Wharton Sports Business Initiative at Penn and is currently a Professor of Global Sport at Arizona State University.

While a new hire is not imminent, it does seem like the process is finally in motion.

Can it get any worse ?

We are destroyed by F‘in Rutgers , lose our QB and our league is falling apart at the seams . We weren’t ready for the ” $$$ to players “, have a coach way over his head at this level and recruiting that is at the bottom third in the league . Oh I forgot we can’t build our own stadium and we haven‘t had a working Athletic director for a long time .

Wonderful times to be an Owl football fan !!!!
