nostalgic for Cheney

It is always easy to think about the good and to forget the bad,and I must admit that I felt that it was time for Coach Cheney to retire, but watching Bo Ryan sit Sam Decker after he took a bad shot made me realize how much I missed the discipline that this rudderless team exhibited throughout the season Dunphy has his strong points, but you would have to wonder what types of players DeCosey, and several others would be if they had someone like Bo Ryan on the bench guiding them.Watching Wisconsin play offense and defense with such skill and ferocity makes me long for what Temple basketball was and could possibly become when a change is finally made

NCAA Coaches Salaries

USA Today ran an article on the salaries of all coaches in the NCAA tournament. Link is attached.

Looking at where Temple is (conference, national exposure, expectations, etc.), they should paying the next coach between $1-2MM if they were to go outside and find a coach. Maybe McKie could be had for the low end but realistically Temple should pay at least $1.5 MM for the next coach (that is total comp with incentives).

announcers

The only uglier thing tonight than our shooting and lack of discipline on offense and terrible play on the defensive end of the floor was listening to the announcers talking endlessly while the game was going on. The analysis of Decosey's foul shooting style was enough to make me turn off the sound. Don't these guys and their bosses listen to the tapes after the games to hear the drivel that comes from them as compared to giving a play by play description of the game in front of them. The referees were also horrible, but nothing can hide the poor performance from everyone on the floor with the exception of Obi. It was a disappointing way to end the season that still offers hope for next year. The 3 recruits look good on paper and there is still the possibility of adding 2 scholarships to a big and to a point guard..

MSG Crowd

I'm not shy about taking shots at Temple's weak fan support. I was happy to see, and impressed, by the size of our crowd that attended the game at MSG. Early on it felt almost like a home game. Lots of students, great band, lots of vocal alums. I drove over four hundred miles to see that game and it was worth it.

Moving Forward

We have now had 4 consecutive teams that have really been poor at one end of the floor. The 3 previous teams couldn't guard at all, and this team couldn't put the ball in the basket. The problems were exacerbated away from home. For the season in road and neutral court games, Temple shot 366-988 or 37%, and were 103-327 from 3 or 31%. You can guard like hell, but at some point you need to be able to make a basket in an unfamiliar gym with a crowd not rooting for you.
Hopefully, Dunphy will make this a point of emphasis and fix this the same way that he fixed the defensive woes this past season. A team that is good at one end and at least average at the other would be a refreshing change of pace.
All in all, this was a very good season. Temple got its MOJO back and rediscovered how hard you need to compete to guard at a high level.

Football Practice

I just came from the Jr. Day football practice, here are my impressions:

It was extremely well organized.

Zaire Wialliams looks great.

Jamie Gilmore is bigger and looked good.

Our five quarterbacks I rate as follows:

1. Walker
2. Marchi - only 170 lbs!
3. Loughery - 6'4 225 lbs.
4. DiGiorgio
5. Nutlie
6. Williams

James McHale looked good. With the additional of our new recruits we will be a much better team next year.

Inquirer/Nova Love Fest

Anyone else getting tired of the Inquirer having constant front page headlines on Nova Basketball? I can understand the pre Tournament coverage, and of course the early out coverage, but do they have to keep the promotion going with the major headline today talking about Wright's concerns. Two more front page stories about Nova. What is the bond between Nova and the Inquirer reporters/sports editor. I don't want this to sound like sour grapes, but years ago, when we were ranked #1 in the country for a prolonged period of time, we never got either the volume, or size of the headlines Villanova has garnered. Does someone at the Main Line school have pictures? I'm not saying playing in the NIT merits anywhere near the same attention, but even when the run has ended, they are still finding ways to keep Nova in front of the Philadelphia Market, and with as large, and bold, a type face they can muster.
