Mailbag questions for The Scoop

Happy New Year, everyone!

We're recording our next episode of The Scoop this week and taking mailbag questions until Friday at 1 p.m. if you have them. Since we've taken a break for almost three weeks due to the holidays, we have a lot of ground to cover with the first installment of Temple's 2024 recruiting class, the staff changes and the portal.

So if you have something you want to put on the agenda, drop it in here. I hope you all had a great holiday season and we look forward to answering your questions.

You’re welcome.

After I win a record powerball jackpot this evening I will be donating a $50M gift to the TUFF fund. Money will be allocated toward NIL partnerships with small and large businesses, and funds directly for distribution to players to secure top talent so we can win a national championship within 3 years. The funds will come with stipulations, such as a clear strategy and execution plan that will need to be voted on by an independent board of directors each year.
We will become unstoppable. Happy days will be here again. We will become a blue blood program with aspirations of winning a title every 5 years.

Its not all bad.

We all know the players we lost but have to be positive with this current recruiting class. 23 players coming in and really added depth to a levels if the defensive side of the ball.

Adding size and depth along the d line was the biggest need in my opinion to go along a DE/OLB from Maryland filled holes and added much needed depth.

They added safties and corners that much like on the d line you have mix of transfers and high school kids that fill needs add depth with good size and dome versatility.

I like they got some size at LB from the portal that a good chance of contributing right away.

Hopefully they get coached up cus to be honest they were so bad that only thing to do is go up.

On offense they added size especially at guard and depth along o line. I hope a couple of freshman from last year team gets in weight room and get stronger and you might have the makings of a d1 caliber unit.

QB is still a ? And work in progress.
I like our WR I think they developing nicely and hope St.Joe product gains size and strength into sophomore year.

I think our rb become better as the o line gets better so work in progress.

And obviously I hope for good health and no major injuries, 5 wins out of question for coming up season?

Time, as they say, is a flat circle so here's this year's version of the OwlScoop.com football scholarship board.

As always, I'll update this as the offseason progresses. Couple of notes...
  1. The transfer window opens December 4. You'll likely see players announce that they intend to enter the transfer portal prior to that date but most will happen on or after December 4. The first transfer window closes quicker this year, as anybody that wants to transfer prior to the summer has to inform their school by January 2.
  2. As of right now, I'm going to keep all the sixth-year guys on this table until they announce that they're not coming back next year. That includes guys like Jordan Magee, Yvandy Rigby, Edward Saydee, Victor Stoffel and Wisdom Quarshie, all of whom could be back next year or could decide to leave North Broad Street.

11/28 - Removed EJ Warner after he announced his intention to enter the transfer portal.
12/1 - Removed Davion Hood after he announced his intention to enter the portal.
12/2 - Removed Edward Saydee after he announced his intention to enter the portal.
12/16 - Removed Jordan Magee after he declared for the NFL Draft.
12/19 - Removed Yvandy Rigby after he declared for the NFL Draft.
12/20 - Removed Kamar Wilcoxson, Brenyen Scott, Chris Van Eekeren, Muheem McCargo and Alex Odom after the updated official roster removed them. Also removed Richard Dandridge after he entered the portal.
12/27 - Removed Jalen McMurray after he announced he was entering the portal.
12/31 - Removed Victor Stoffel after he announced he was entering the portal.
1/4 - Removed Dominick Hill after he announced he was entering the portal.
1/11 - Removed Darvon Hubbard after he announced he was entering the portal.
1/16 - Removed Bryce Thoman and Jermaine Donaldson after they announced they were entering the portal.
4/5 - Removed Clifton McDowell and Zamar Grove after they announced they were entering the portal.
4/15 - Spring ball is over and the inevitable departures have started. Removed Kaleb Barnett, Gensley Auguste and Corey Yeoman.
4/16 - Removed Daiyaan Hawkins and Sam Martin.
4/17 - Removed Corey Palmer.
4/18 - Removed Jason Moore, Kyle Williams and Chevez Trask.
4/19 - Removed Joseph Appiah Darkwa.
4/24 - Removed Zyheem Coleman-Frazier after he was removed from the roster.

Some updates

Buffalo transfer Cole Snyder canceled his official visit to Temple, and a source familiar with his recruitment said Snyder's decision was tied to Evan Simon's commitment. As of now, Simon, Tyler Douglas and Forrest Brock would be the only scholarship quarterbacks on the Owls' roster heading into spring ball. Temple had been recruiting Johnathan Montague, but he committed to Boston College.

Another source familiar with the situation told me the Temple staff is still actively recruiting Samari Collier, who verbally committed to Arkansas State six days ago. Collier started his college career out of Texas' DeSoto High School at Illinois but eventually wound up at Hutchinson Community College, where he tallied 14 touchdowns and 1,400 passing yards this season for a team that reached the NJCAA semifinals. Programs like Buffalo, Western Michigan, Georgia State and Sam Houston State have been in on his recruitment.

Stan Drayton and his staff are still recruiting some high school quarterbacks, too, although I want to do a little more work on that before I can start putting names out there.

As Kyle Gauss reported earlier, JUCO running back Tyrei Washington has not committed to Temple yet, but two sources familiar with his recruitment told me the Owls look to be in pretty good shape there. If he commits, Washington would enroll in January and be around for spring ball.

Also, Salesianum School defensive end Ahmaad Foster reopened his recruitment last night and decommitted from Temple, I was told by a source I trust down in Delaware. That source told me Foster wants to play somewhere farther away from home.

Three more verbals

Western Carolina safety Andreas Keaton, Austin Peay kicker Maddox Trujillo and Arkansas redshirt freshman defensive back Jaylen Lewis all committed today, per multiple sources.

Keaton, a 6-foot-2, 200-pound rising senior, had 66 total tackles and three passes defended. Lewis, a former 3-star recruit out of Brownsville, Tennessee with multiple high-major offers from programs like Auburn, Florida State and Michigan State, played sparingly in his first two seasons with the Razorbacks. Ironically enough, the only game in which he recorded stats came in the season opener against Western Carolina, when he had two tackles.

Trujillo went 13 of 15 on field goals this season, with a long of 45 yards. His numbers were improved from a year ago, when he went 11 of 20 on field goals but did hit a 55-yarder. He was named the United Athletic Conference Scholar Athlete of the Year this season.
