Christmas in July

If you like hearing from Dionte Christmas, you'll enjoy the second part of my conversation with him. Among other things, he talked to me about what's good and not good about the portal and NIL, about his time in the NBA, and about the time he regrettably trash talked LeBron James.

Personal ask

Hi guys,

For those of you that don’t follow me on Twitter, I figured I’d post this here.

I’ll be participating in next month’s The Ben to the Shore Bike Tour, a 65-mile ride from Philly to AC that benefits the children of fallen first responders, including the children of fallen Temple police officer Chris Fitzgerald. If you have the means, please consider supporting me in this cause.

Mailbag questions for The Scoop - 5 p.m. deadline today

Hi, everyone!

Apologies for the quick turnaround, but we're taking mailbag questions for this week's episode of The Scoop until 5 p.m. today. We'll talk about Temple's two verbal commitments (and keep your eyes peeled for a third on the way), the roster and anything else you'd like to put on the agenda.

Just a friendly reminder that you can find us on all of the major podcast platforms, including Apple Podcasts, and ratings and reviews help us - and Temple sports coverage in general - more visibility on those platforms.

Could Temple take two quarterbacks in the 2025 class?

I talked Saturday to Romelo Tables, the quarterback from Shabazz High School who recently took an official visit to Temple.

He told me that he wanted to commit, but that Stan Drayton told him he would have to wait to do so.

"On the visit, I had a conversation with Coach Drayton, and as of right now, they have five quarterbacks on their roster," Tables told me, "and a spot isn't really open right now, so we have to wait a little bit closer to season time, to see if somebody leaves or if anything changes in that room.

"So as of right now, I couldn't really commit, unfortunately, because I really wanted to find a spot there and make it home. But it is what it is. I appreciate them having a conversation with me because they kept it honest with me. But it's still an open opportunity. So I still want to see my options, but they're still high on my board, if not No. 1."

So, yes, Temple does have five quarterbacks on its roster, if you count walk-on Patrick Keller, whom I think the staff legitimately does like. But aside from him, you have the four scholarship guys in Evan Simon, Forrest Brock, Tyler Douglas and incoming freshman Chris Dietrich.

The educated/logical guess here is that the coaches were waiting on Camren Boykin's decision when they talked to Tables. With Boykin announcing his verbal commitment today, you now have five scholarship QBs on the board.

Could someone leave? Perhaps. Simon has two years left, as does Brock, and Douglas has four. I've also been told that the staff thinks highly enough of Dietrich to give him a long look this summer in preseason camp and that it's not a foregone conclusion that he'll just be brought along slowly and buried on the depth chart.

But it appears Temple is comfortable with a maximum of five QBs and, unless something changes, that means they don’t have a spot for Tables. None of the current quarterbacks could enter the portal until December. If they wanted to leave, they would have to go the JUCO route or just leave football for a year.

Temple football adds NCAA National Champion Sprinter

Pretty interesting development here as Ashton Allen, a member of USC's 2022 National Champion 4x100 team and a First Team All-American in the 4x100 and 4x400, has joined Temple's football team as a wide receiver.

Stan Drayton narrows down Owls' QB competition

At last week's Temple Takeover event, Stan Drayton told Jake Gabel that Forrest Brock and Evan Simon are the top competitors in the starting quarterback battle, but he wouldn't rule out Tyler Douglas.

Mailbag questions for The Scoop

Good morning, everyone!

If you have mailbag questions for The Scoop, please drop them in here by 2 p.m. Wednesday and we'll answer them on the show.

This week's episode will include part of my 1-on-1 interview with Dionte Christmas, who was recently named to this year's Temple Athletics Hall of Fame class. Dionte, as many of you know, is a great storyteller, so I have almost two hours recorded with him. I'll have some of it for the pod and then break out the rest of it later this month or next month just for subscribers.

For the portion you'll hear in the pod, he talked about his time at Temple, shared some funny stories about Juan Fernandez, fistfights at practice and how Fran Dunphy and the staff would sort them out, and about his friendship with Ben Simmons.

So let us know what's on your mind, be it recruiting updates, roster questions or anything else you'd like to put on the agenda.

Official visitors from the past weekend

Temple hosted its first official visit weekend of the summer and some highly-touted recruits were on campus.

DeCarlos Young is listed as a 3-star linebacker by Rivals but is likely to end up on the offensive side of the ball in college. The 5-foot-11, 220-pound Young rushed for 1,395 yards and 25 touchdowns for Wise (MD) last year and has collected offers from schools like Michigan, Boston College and West Virginia.

Defensive end DeAngelo Bowden had 18 sacks for St. John's College (DC) last year, a performance that garnered him offers from schools like Arkansas, Pitt, USF, and Memphis.
