Interesting Perspective on Conference Realignment w/ John Skipper

Former television executive John Skipper is interviewed on the Le Batard show.

He underscores the importance of adding new states in conference expansion. Points to the academic interests of the Big 10, PAC 12 and ACC. Shits on the governance failures of the NCAA, Maryland's decision to join the Big 10 and the Big 10's decision to add Rutgers. He seems to have some antiquated views (e.g. four, 16 team conferences) but still brings an informed perspective. Nothing Temple-specific.

I like this column/perspective from Paul Zeise

Paul Zeise: Conference commissioners are the biggest frauds in sports"

Truth from Zeise

Some excerpts:

"Here is a memo to every school president, every college conference commissioner, every coach and every athletic director:

"If you are confused as to why student-athletes have no loyalty, are willing to sell their souls to the highest bidder, run to the transfer portal at the first opportunity and have their hands out and want every dime they think they are owed, look in the mirror. They have had great role models, as all of you operate the same way, and the only thing that is different is the amount of money being handed out.

"The next time a coach whines about players wanting NIL, point to Oklahoma, Texas, USC, UCLA, the Big Ten and the SEC. The next time a coach or administrator whines about the “transfer culture,” point to Kevin Warren, Lincoln Riley, Greg Sankey, former ACC commissioner John Swofford — who led the raid of the Big East — and every other one of these “role models’ whose word is obviously worthless.

"And please, here is one other thing: Spare me the crap about how this is “what’s best for student-athletes” or the garbage that was spewed from places like Penn State about how these moves are good for academics or made with academics in mind. I’ve read about five of these statements from Big Ten administrators welcoming USC and UCLA, and I wish I would have had boots on and a shovel it was piling up so quick."

Mailbag questions for The Scoop

We're taking mailbag questions for this week's episode of The Scoop until 4 p.m. today. We'll of course talk about the addition of Shane Dezonie, the offer to class of 2023 wing Zion Stanford from West Catholic and anything else you all want to discuss.

OT - Memphis

Did anyone else see Memphis-Ole Miss game yesterday? The Tigers lost and didn't look particularly good doing it. Third loss in a row.

They were sloppy (at least 20 turnovers). Not particularly smart - driving into traffic, questionable ball movement. Crap body language on the bench.

I saw something about Penny ripping his ballclub's team chemistry. Isn't that attributable to coaching, at least in part?

NOW - AND I AM EMPHASIZING THIS - I am not saying Temple will beat Memphis, have an easy time with Memphis, has better athletes than Memphis. Nothing like that. Especially winning at Memphis.

It just struck me - as a philosophical question.

Does it really matter how many stars a guy has, if he doesn't produce? If he doesn't contribute to the team, either on the court or on the locker room?

Again, I am not suggesting in the least that I'd turn down a 5-star kid who'd want to come to Temple. Or making ANY pronouncements about anyone, pro or con.

Thoughts?

Update to Kevin Terry story

Rivals National Recruiting Analyst Ryan Wright, who's based in Florida, offered us this scouting report on Kevin Terry. It's included in an updated version of Terry's commitment story, but I'll drop in his quote here:

"There is a lot of upside to Kevin Terry’s game. Playing left tackle for Clearwater Central Catholic, Terry is getting great exposure to the speed rushers off the edge showing his footwork and lateral movement. He is a good run blocker and will excel at that early in his college career. As he adds more mass and strength to his big frame, he will start dominating 1-on-1 matchups up front."

Another JUCO player to keep an eye on

Based on a few people I've talked to recently, it sounds like Temple is also looking at Russell Harrison, a 6-foot-7, 190-pound forward at Texas' Clarendon College. He’s averaging 19.4 points and 8 rebounds per game, shooting 47 percent overall and 42 percent from 3-point range. Had 23 points in his most recent game.

He has offers from Oklahoma State and Texas A&M.

Greene, who has an offer from Central Michigan, had nine sacks en route to a Second Team All-State selection and a PIAA 5 State championship last season. Interestingly, Greene actually threw the game-tying touchdown pass in the championship win over Imhotep last year.
