Would never happen but...

What if we sold the University to Amazon? Amazon just purchased One Medical in California for $4b. One Medical had about $623m in annual revenues so it's like a 6.5 ratio. Temple as an entire system brought in $2.4b in revenue last year. That would put our valuation in the $13b - $20b range. That's pocket change for Amazon. Amazon would get an east coast foot print for their expanding medical services division and a medical school where they could train and recruit their own talent. And a successful business and law school. And the infrastructure to hit the ground running with a worlds best of class computer engineering program. Amazon has 1.6m employees as of the end of 2021. It's a lot cheaper to ask kids to pay you $20k or $35k a year to learn from you and then take your jobs than it is to pay thousands of HR and recruiter personnel 6 figures each to chase after people all over the world. If you go to work for Amazon after you graduate, your tuition is reimbursed.

Does anyone here think that Villanova basketball would compete against us in a world of NIL if we had Amazon's financial backing? Villanova would have to open up an Etsy shop. And think of the multimedia possibilities!

It's only a matter of time before something like this happens. If not us, it'll be someone else. Schools like Alabama and Georgia and Texas and Villanova are bullies. Mediocre fish in a small pond who make and break all the rules on the elementary school playground but don't actually flex any true creative muscle because they don't see the world past the fence around the schoolyard.

Also it's July. What else is there to talk about right now?

Great Temple hoops anecdotes from Dan Leibovitz

We've had a lot of fun and great feedback and engagement so far from fans and readers with our All-Time Temple Hoops fantasy draft, and I wanted to post this Twitter thread from former Temple assistant and current SEC Associate Commissioner Dan Leibovitz for those of you who are not on social media.

We each drafted an assistant coach as part of our roster, and Varun Kumar selected Dan, who was kind enough to break down Varun's entire roster today in a Twitter thread.

You can click on the link here to read Dan's entire thread and roster breakdown. Lots of great anecdotes and memories here.

The scoop on West Catholic's Zion Stanford

In case you missed it out on the front page, I talked to Miguel Bocachica, the head coach at West Catholic High School, about class of 2023 wing forward Zion Stanford, who picked up a Temple offer last week on an unofficial visit.

I'm hoping to talk to Stanford at some point today, so stay tune for more coverage of his offer and recruitment.

Xach Gill talks return from injury, culture change at Temple

In addition to Adam Klein, I also talked last night to nose tackle Xach Gill at the Temple Takeover event prior to the Phillies game at Citizens Bank Park.

Gill said players "enjoy coming into the building" under new head coach Stan Drayton.

You can read the full interview here.

Adam Klein discusses growth at position, return of Chris Wiesehan and more

I talked to Adam Klein last night at the Temple Takeover prior to the Phillies game about what position he'll play this season, why it's such a big deal that offensive line coach Chris Wiesehan has returned, and which players have caught his eye as preseason camp approaches.

You can read the full interview here.

Upcoming football coverage and media availability

With Temple set to kick off preseason camp next Thursday, here's a look at what's ahead in terms of what you can expect from our football coverage and media availability.

In addition to Stan Drayton, Adam Klein and Xach Gill taking part in The American Athletic Conference virtual media day this coming Thursday at approximately 3 p.m., the team will host its in-person media day on Thursday prior to their session with the conference.

That in-person session will include Drayton, Gill, Klein, David Martin-Robinson, Jordan Magee and Darian Varner.

We'll have coverage of both media day sessions.

And here's the tentative media availability schedule for preseason camp:

Friday, Aug. 5 - Stan Drayton, Danny Langsdorf, D.J. Eliot and Adam Scheier

Monday, August 8 - Drayton, Jafar Williams and Jules Montinar

Friday, August 12 - Drayton, Chris Wiesehan and Antoine Smith

Monday, August 15 - Drayton and select players

Monday, August 22 - Stan Drayton's first weekly Monday noon press conference

Friday, August 26 - Drayton, select players

Monday, August 29 - Drayton noon press conference

The Owls of course then open their season four days later on the road at Duke at 7:30 p.m.

Thank you all for your patience over the last few weeks. I've had to direct a lot of attention to my family with my father's illness and eventual passing. I'm looking forward to getting back into the swing of things and appreciate your support of the site. It means a lot.

Snaps by the Numbers

Thanks for posting that John! I'm pleased at how well we were able to build out the skill positions through the portal and getting Quincy Patterson could be huge. I don't love Mathis but if he beats out Patterson for the job, at least we know he earned it. Really tough to go from worst to first in one year though. I'm concerned about the OL. Wiesehan has his work cut out for him. Hopefully we can put enough together for a .500 season and build on that into 2023.

Condolences JDC

Hi All,
Just wanted to share here some heartfelt condolences to John DiCarlo and his family for the loss of John’s father. Whether you know John personally or not, follow him outside of this forum via other social platforms or not, John is the lifeblood and leader of this site. He’s the common bond who literally unites everyone here, whether you are a current or former player, an administrator, Owlscoop staff member/alum, troll, or diehard Temple whacko like me. Sometimes a few of us don’t see eye to eye on certain things, but it’s the great content and mostly civil discussion that makes this place my home for Temple football and basketball. And we have John and his team to thank for that, so if he’s hurting, he should know that we are all thinking of him and his family during such a difficult time. Rest In Peace, Mr. DiCarlo, and John, all the best to you and your family.
