Why is our basketball team so terrible?

Let's assume for the purposes of our discussion that the team really is terrible. How do we know? Well, we have 5 Elite Eight banners, and we got the most recent one 14 years ago. Our current coach Dunphy is in his 10th year, so we must be terrible, at least by comparison to the previous coaches.

Themes like this are repeatedly posted by a subgroup of posters who unfortunately seem to write the same message over and over again. I wish that they would explain why we think the team is so terrible, and then we might have something interesting to discuss. I will offer two hypotheses.

The first hypothesis is that Coach Dunphy is completely incompetent and only has his job, with its concomitant 7-figure income, because of the "old boy" network that he and Bill Bradshaw are part of. If we could just get rid of Dunphy and find a reasonably competent replacement, then we would go back to the glory days of Temple. Who knows, we might even move up from having the 6th most all-time wins to having the 5th most all-time wins. I don't believe in this hypothesis myself, but I throw it our there so its backers can argue for it.

The second hypothesis is that coaching college basketball has become a lot harder than it used to be and schools have to develop new strategies to keep up. In the John Chaney glory days he got to compete against coaches like Norm Stewart of Missouri who couldn't strategize his way out of a wet paper bag and we could count on the wins. There was a good list of other coaches who were nearly as bad as Stewart. Today's coaches are clearly better and it is hard to find bad coaches like Stewart who actually make it to the NCAA tournament.

Moreover, more schools are taking basketball seriously now and even so-called "mid majors" are trying to recruit good talent. Therefore, the coaches are now better and more numerous. Unless a university is willing to invest in its basketball program it is going to fall behind. Does anybody know how much Temple spends on recruiting each year? How does our recruiting budget compare with that of comparable schools? How much do our assistant coaches get paid? How do those salaries compare to the schools that we compete against?

In the story about firing Mike Rice from UNLV I noticed the references to what the "big donors" wanted. Do we have such big donors at Temple? If not, does that have important consequences for our recruiting budget?

Look, I would like to return to the Chaney glory days. I can't make it happen though. The next best thing would be at least to understand why we aren't there. Is it because Dunphy is terrible or because the university doesn't spend enough money the right way on basketball. I'd love to hear from anybody with knowledge or opinions on this subject.

If Coughlin goes to Eagles.....

Do we have anything to worry about regarding Rhule's future at N. Broad? I think its probably a long shot but there are a few factors that make a lot of sense. Rhule and his family love Philly and Rhule loves the NFL and some one here have said his future is most likely NFL over another college destination. Also, Rhule and Coughlin love each other. This seems like a very unique opportunity.

After spending a few years and gaining the experience as a HC at Temple, he has the opportunity to join the staff of a coach who he loves and respects, and break into the league without uprooting his family and staying in the city that him and his wife love.

Whether or not it happens, it is a pretty unique opportunity for him and may continue to be while Coughlin is still in Philly

Memphis loss...

exhibited all the structural problems with this team that they just can't overcome:

1) Lack of a post presence on defense -- this was exhibited by our inability to guard Shaq Goodwin down the stretch and Obi, once again, being completely ineffective as a post defender (and rebounder)

2) Inability to get to the free-throw line -- this was exhibited by our lack of a post player on offense and lack of any ability of any of our players to drive to the basket and draw fouls (Memphis shot 30 free-throws and Temple only 9!).

3) No legitimate pg -- this was once again exhibited by Josh Brown turning the ball over in a pivotal moment in a close game in an attempt to make a play (I believe he did the same thing against SJU)

4) Once again, Decosey's inability to step up as a senior leader during key moments of a close game -- this was exhibited with his turnover late in the game and his inability to score when needed the most (can you imagine how Khalif Wyatt, Ramone Moore, or Dionte Christmas would have played during the key stretch during such a game. It's a reason Dunphy made Bond the only senior captain. Decosey will never be what he's capable of being. We should just accept it)

5. Just overall undisciplined and boneheaded play down the stretch of games -- this was exhibited by Coleman's awful fade-away shot in the last minute, Dingle's awful 3 point shot, and the most idiotic foul I've ever seen committed in Temple basketball history, also compliments of Dingle.

At the end of the day, this team just can't get out of its own way because the personnel won't allow it to. The poor recruiting has brought us to where we are now.

Offensive Coordinator

JDC, any word on this front? When Shoop left PSU they hired from within, in just a few days. Is it safe to say that they anticipate having to look outside the program? Otherwise I feel as though they would have already promoted Glenn Thomas. Maybe they aren't confident he won't go back to the NFL? Id also think that it's less than ideal to have Montel Aaron on campus this weekend without him knowing who his OC is.

Penn State

Since they are our marquee non-conference game next year, they lost to Georgia in the Taxslayer bowl just now. Christian Hackenberg left the game in the 2nd Quarter with an injury. With the rumors he is leaving for the NFL draft, his back up (Trace McSorley) played the rest of the game. He will be a redshirt sophmore next year and brought PSU back within one touchdown at the end the end of the game.

McSorely is a dual threat so he has some running ability and is the favorite to be their QB next year if Hackenberg leaves. His profile says he is 6 foot and around 200 pounds.

I am not sure about how many other guys they have coming back but it looks likely they will be replacing 3 starting defensive lineman with Nassib and Zettel graduating and Austin Johnson likely declaring for the draft.

Quotable from yesterday

When Matt Rhule was asked yesterday about the staff's approach to recruiting and everything that has come with the team's recent success, this was part of his answer.

"Sometimes when you recruit four-star players, you get four-star problems. And sometimes when you recruit two- and three-star kids, you get award winners."

He went on to say that the staff would by no means shy away from recruiting highly-ranked players, but it was his way of saying that they're still trusting what they see and looking for the same qualities they always have.
