RUTGERS COMMITS

It burns me that Rutgers got verbals from Cedar Creek WR Bo Melton, Timber Creek ATH Naijee Jones and 6-5, 260-pound St. John Vianney OL Micah Clark. We offered all of them. Clark is from Holmdel, N.J., so I can understand him wanting to stay close to home, but Melton is from Egg Harbor, N.J., and Jones is from Sicklerville, N.J.

I detest Rutgers with a serious passion.

P.J. Walker, Temple offense impress in Cherry and White game

I saw this article on csnphilly.com written by one of the Owlscoop writers (I think). But the part that caught my attention is what I bolded below:

“I lead by example and I don’t really say much, but when I need to, I will,” Walker said. “I’m not just gonna sit here and yell at guys for no reason.

“For example, (offensive lineman) Leon Johnson, he’s a guy we need. At times, him and (offensive lineman) Brian Carter look like they don’t want to be practicing. So I pulled them to the side and said, 'Yo, you need to look like you love football more.’ It’s small things like that. Just tell them and get them involved. The same thing you do in practice is what you’re going to do in the game.”

I know Johnson and Carter have been around for a few years now. Are they being counted on to start on the offensive line?

Alani Moore and Quinton Rose

Will be playing together beginning this weekend in the Albert Schweitzer Tournament in Mannheim, Germany as members of the 18U USA Select team. The tournament runs 3/26 thru 4/2. I don't know anything about this tournament or what the 18U USA Select team is, so not sure how big of a honor it is to be selected, but it will give the two of them a chance to play together prior to reporting to Temple this summer. Here is a link to the team roster and the tournament website:

CHANDLER

JDC: I'm a huge Sean Chandler fan. To me, he's a playmaker. Do you think Chandler moving to safety means that the coaching staff is really high on Derrek Thomas, Nate Hairston, Artrel Foster and Kareem Ali? Or maybe does it mean incoming freshmen like Linwood Crump, Amir Tyler or any of the other incoming guys might play early? There are a lot of DBs in this class with Kimere Brown, Keyvone Bruton, Benny Walls, Sam Franklin, Kareem Gaulden and Isaiah Graham-Mobley. I realize some will be safeties, some will end up at linebacker after a RS year and some will move to offense, but there is so much depth at DB. Could it be the coaches just think Chandler playing center field is what the team needs, or will he be back at CB come September?

This position switch really intrigues me. He can be a threat returning interceptions. He's smart, so he can direct the defense and be a ball hawk. And if Thomas can pull this off and be a CB, he'd be able to match up with the really tall WRs. And it would give Ali and these other kids a chance to play, too.

Just curious what you think about the whole thing.

C&W OBSERVATIONS

Romond Deloatch was playing left defensive end today. He looked pretty good.

The three freshmen LBs, Shaun Bradley, Chapelle Russell and Daishaun Grimes looked really good to me. All three had huge hits on RBs. Bradley looked especially talented. He really leveled Travon Williams on a run play with about 5:50 left in the game.

Frank Nutile really looked good at times. Had that nice 70-yard TD pass to Keith Kirkwood. And another nice TD pass on a fake and then a rollout to TE Alex Carling. Logan Marchi looked like Donovan McNabb, throwing a lot of balls into the turf. P.J. looked ready.

Jager Gardner and Ryquell Armstead really looked good. Fast, big, strong. Great runs by both. I'm real pumped about them.

Josiah Bronson and DeAndre Kelly are big dudes. I hope they can make an impact this season. Actually, they have to make an impact this season.

It was great to see RS freshman safety Jeremiah Atoki, coverted WR Derrek Thomas and RS freshman CB Kareem Ali in the defensive backfield making plays.

I thought CBs Nate Hairston and Artrel Foster looked good. Ditto for Sean Chandler and Delvon Randall at safety.

RS freshman DE Jeromy Reichner from West Catholic looked good at defensive end.

RS freshman TE Jake Robinson made a few nice catches, especially one that almost hit the ground in which he made a great grab.

Adonis Jennings, Marshall Ellick and Kirkwood looked good. Brodrick Yancy was back at WR today.

Walk-on RS freshman LB Mike DeFrancesco from Neumann-Goretti had a nice play, picking off a pass.

Walk-on Jordan Jones started a center, with Leon Johnson at RT and Dion Dawkins at LT, with Brian Carter at RG and Semaj Reed at LG. Brendan McGowan played LG for a bit, but he had a big cast on his right hand, so I'm guessing that's why he wasn't at center.

I could go on, but that's just some of the stuff I saw. It was great how the incoming recruits were introduced at halftime. I thought that was great.

Yesterday's interviews

I know some of you basically like to skim through things to get what you need, but I'd really encourage you all - if you're looking for spring football insight - to listen to yesterday's postgame interviews. Virtually every player gave the assembled media a lot of great stuff. Even Sean Chandler, who's usually very quiet. opened up a lot.

I also enjoyed talking to Chapelle Russell, who had some respectful but frank and honest comments about the defense's desire to have more team speed than it did last season.
