Transfer News

Per a source, Temple is expected to receive the commitment of UNC Defensive Tackle transfer Xach Gill soon. Gill was originally a 4-star prospect out of Wake Forest HS in 2017 and chose North Carolina over Penn State, Miami (FL), Pitt and Virginia Tech. Rivals had Gill as the No. 17 defensive tackle in the 2017 class. Gill was an All-State selection in North Carolina after posting 84 tackles, 34 TFL and 18 sacks as a senior.

At UNC, Gill recorded 17 tackles, 2.5 TFL and two sacks. In 2019, Gill played 137 defensive snaps and graded out, according to Pro Football Focus, as UNC's third best DT. Gill started against Wake that season as a redshirt-sophomore and led the Tar Heels with two QB pressures en route to being rated as UNC's second best defensive player by PFF. In 2020, Gill's role diminished as former 4-star prospect Myles Murphy surpassed him on the depth chart.

Gill will have two years of eligibility left at Temple.

A name to keep an eye on

Temple is recruiting former Michigan State cornerback Davion Williams out of the transfer portal, per a source familiar with his recruitment.

Williams has played sparingly in his first three seasons at Michigan State. He saw a few snaps as a true freshman in 2018 and was able to redshirt, had two fumble recoveries and a forced fumble in 2019 and posted eight tackles in seven games this past season. He was a teammate of both M.J. Griffin and D'Wan Mathis when they all played at Belleville High School at one point.

Williams is a former basketball player turned football player. The scouting report I received is that he's a very good athlete who could turn the corner with continued coaching and technical development.

I'm not sure if a Temple commitment is imminent, but the Owls are in the mix.

Jeremiah Williams finding early success

Some light reading ahead of today's Temple v. SMU game. I had the chance to talk to Jeremiah Williams about playing for his third head coach in three years and how that's helped shape his success early in his college career.

The Scoop with Chris Clark

If you want a good, comprehensive look at the Temple roster, Chris Clark provides it here in this week's podcast. He spent almost an hour with us. He broke down just about every player on the roster and also was able to talk for the first time about the signings of Hysier Miller and Zach Hicks.

There are time stamps on the link to the podcast. The Clark interview starts at the 33:25 mark. Hope you enjoy it and thank you to all of you for listening and for submitting mailbag questions.

Decision Day

Its a rap. Interviews are over and done with.

Although there have been quite a few worthy candidates brought forward to state their cases, I'm thinking that it all comes down to two guys -

Mike Elko and Ed Foley.

Interestingly, they have worked together at two different stops along their individual coaching paths.

Arguments can be made for others - Fran and Wiesy most notably IMO, and maybe Manny Diaz. But the two above mentioned really are the most logical for all of the opposite reasons as well as some of the same.

For the record, I could certainly endorse either as a good choice on the surface.

That said, I'm probably completely wrong and Pat Kraft will announce someone else. LOL

Why? Because he's really smart and really good at what he does and knows a lot more about what's involved with this than all of us combined.

Its going to be an interesting next 24 hours, gents.

Film study: A closer look at the Owls' freshmen

If you haven't yet, check out @Sam Cohn's piece on how Temple's freshmen played against NJIT in the opener. Lots of good insight and detail. Hope you're all enjoying a happy, healthy and safe holiday season!

AAC Championship Game

Tulsa at Cincy on ABC right now. A Cincy win gets them the Access Bowl for sure and a very small, outside shot at the Playoff with ND getting beat up by Clemson today. A Tulsa win will send Coastal Carolina to the Access Bowl (remember the complaints about Temple scheduling them a while back).

The league clearly would like Cincy to win....
