Bus Trip to Rutgers. Time of Death 10:20 AM EDT 8.25.2023

We just ran out of time. We had less than 10 people. I want to acknowledge Tannenhouser for all of his help in this endeavor.

There us plenty of blame to go around. Athletics, Alumni Association, our apathetic alumni. We could have used more help from everyone where I publicly posted this. We have 350,00 alumni in the Philly area. Sadly, I heard from just one. Just. One. Alum.

Let's avoid the wormhole that it was not my job to do this. We all know that. It does not need to be complained out again.

Let me say that whatever blame gets thrown around, please, let it start with me. I just did not get it done.

Thank You

An injury and schedule update

We've been told that Providence transfer Quante Berry has been recovering from wrist surgery but is expected to recover and be ready in time for preseason practice and the season.

We've also been told the Owls are playing Bloomsburg. Not in an exhibition game, but a regular-season game in December. With the department's budget where it is, buy games are taking a backseat right now.

Edward Saydee: 23 to 5
Alex Odom: 25 to 2
Victor Stoffel: (Has to continue to wear 78 on the field, awarded No. 4)

Dark-horse candidate:
Ben Osueke: 24 to 3

In 2012 - 2014 TU Athletics
had a staffer who came from Louisville. They were ready to move to the ACC, Strong was the coach, and Terry Bridgewater was the QB. I asked the staffer how many years he thought TUFB was behind Louisville. He told me, "Louisville is still about 5 yrs behind Kentucky, and TU is about five years behind Louisville."

It's now 2023. Louisville caught Kentucky, and TUFB has slipped another _____ yrs behind Louisville? Let's compare TU w/UCF. We are stupid to want something the BOT does not.

Interesting stuff from Tywan Francis, Dominick Hill and Elijah Deravil

Francis, Hill and Deravil were some of the best interviews of the preseason.

Between his film and his personality, it's easy to see why Francis could be a tone-setter in the secondary, and I asked Hill about comparisons between his current position coach, Dominique Bowman, and former Owls cornerbacks coach Fran Brown, someone Hill knows from his recruitment.

Here's Declan's Tuesday preseason camp notebook with more from Francis, Hill and Deravil.

And you can watch their interviews from yesterday here.

Second and final plea for bus trip to Rutgers.

Before I begin, please let’s not get into why Temple Alumni Association or Athletics is not handling this (like every other university in the nation is). I do not want to be doing this. I am doing this out of necessity (and a little bit of selfishness as I grew up there and have no desire to spend hours in Piscataway waiting hours amongst obnoxious and inebriated fans for a bus to bring me back to the RAC parking lot)

This is my second and final plea for people to attend the bus trip. I ask, plead, beg for you all not to prove how apathetic the alumni are. Please help me break that stigma. I am willing to subsidize this trip in order to make it happen.

Our players, coaches and staff deserve support. Here is an efficient way to do that. It is only fifty miles away.

Please see below:

All,

I am organizing a potential bus trip trip to Rutgers.

Cost will be around $50.00 per person. With game ticket and tailgate, price will be $100 per person. For everything. If we get over 20 people to sign up, the bus will be feasible.

The bus will leave from and return to, Temple Main Campus

Please get back to me at:

if interested.

Thank You.

Notes from today's practice

We'll have a camp notebook later tonight from Declan Landis. Wanted to pass along a few things from today's practice and media availability.

@Owlo79, you had asked about special teams. We got to see the last 20 minutes or so of practice, and in that time, Camden Price hit two field goals, including one from 55 yards out that made it with another 5-10 yards to spare. Drayton said the placekicking job is his to lose. No surprise there. And Dante Atton has been handling punting. Price, Chris Van Eekeren and Carl Hardin are all competing to be the kickoff specialist.

I asked Drayton about who's returning kicks and punts. Dante Wright, Jalen McMurray and Amad Anderson are all in the mix there, with Anderson and McMurray logging some experience there, and Drayton said true freshmen Richard Dandridge and Joquez Smith are competing as well in the kick return game.

Along the defensive line, Drayton talked again about wanting to build quality depth there and said that Zamar Grove and true freshman Conlan Greene are competing for snaps. And on the injury front, Georgia Tech transfer K.J. Miles was on the sideline and didn't practice. Drayton called his injury a hiccup and something he's working through.

New single digit Victor Stoffel was playing snaps at left tackle instead of right tackle at the end of practice. True freshman Luke Watson was playing alongside him at left guard, and Drayton and the coaches seem quite encouraged with his play right now. Stoffel happened to mention that Bryce Thoman is injured and that Watson has been getting some snaps in his place. True to form, Chris Wiesehan is very much cross-training his linemen and getting more of them snaps, and we saw Jackson Pruitt getting some time at the end of practice. Laney Community College transfer Chris Smith was out there, too, and true freshman Kevin Terry, another player Drayton appears to be high on, was getting some snaps at right tackle.

In the limited time we were there, what appeared to be the first-team offense wasn't having much success. E.J. Warner missed a few throws, was pressured on others and had a couple of passes dropped, including drops from John Adams and Xavier Irvin. Drayton said again that if the season started tomorrow that Quincy Patterson would be the No. 2 QB, and that Tyler Douglas and JUCO transfer Forrest Brock would be competing for the No. 3 spot.

When I asked Drayton about what tangible improvement he's seen on the offensive line, he mentioned Wisdom Quarshie and he has "improved tremendously."

Again, we'll have more from Declan later, including audio and quotes.

A few notes and observations from today's practice

We did get to see about 15-20 minutes of the tail end of today's practice at Chodoff Field before media availability with Stan Drayton, Jordan Magee, E.J. Warner, Edward Saydee and Jalen McMurray.

Again, this was a small slice of the end of the day, but here are a few takeaways from what we saw.

The highlight of the session we saw was a touchdown pass from quarterback Forrest Brock, the recent JUCO addition from Santa Monica Community College, to John Adams, a local walk-on wide receiver from South Jersey's Deptford High School who also made some plays in the spring game. On that series, Brock went 4 of 6 passing. Jordan Smith hauled in a pass from him on a one-handed catch, and true freshman Xavier Irvin also caught a pass from Brock on that drive. Fellow freshman wideout Preston Everhart had a drop on that series on a route over the middle.

In the time we were there, JUCO transfer Diego Barajas and redshirt sophomore James Faminu both saw snaps at left tackle. True freshman Luke Watson saw some snaps at left guard, and Richard Rodriguez was taking the majority of the snaps at center in the time we were there.

Again, this was a small snippet of practice near the end of the day, so I want to note that for context.

Chris Van Eckeren, the graduate transfer from Purdue, hit the PAT on that drive and then later missed a longer field goal of what looked like about 50 yards.

After practice, Drayton said the team would have its next single-digit vote today and that new single digits would be announced Monday. He said the starting quarterback job is Warner's to lose (nothing new there), and that Quincy Patterson would be the No. 2 QB right now. He misfired on a few throws in the time we were there. But again, it was a small portion of practice and not the whole session.

Drayton also said the team is set to scrimmage tomorrow.

“It’s been a very physical camp,” he said. “We’ve got a chippy group of guys, which is what we need to be out here at Temple.”

McMurray attributed a lot of his growth over the last several months to new cornerbacks coach Dominique Bowman, and Saydee and Drayton also talked about the difference running backs coach Tyree Foreman has made in that room. Foreman, of course, is back at Temple for his second stint at that position, having coached the Owls' running backs from 2007 to 2012.

Question for NIL Panel at Zoom Call Tomorrow

Tomorrow is the NIL information zoom call. If anyone still needs information, please email me at davidjgoldberg@icloud,.com and I will forward it to you. There is a Q and A portion. But they also asked for questions to be submitted in advance. I have submitted mine. However, should my questions not be selected., I am posting them here to get them on the record. And so that the conversation and subsequent actions to keep the TUFF Fund progressing to its (our) vital goals, will carry on.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

NIL Questions:

Why is not the BOT directly involved in the NIL. Why isn’t one of the members leading this initiative?

Why are there impediments blocking us (Athletics and Alumni) from accessing the BOT?

The staffing issues and budget issues are well known and appreciated. Still, what resources can Athletics provide to promote and assist the NIL, (in our case, this is the TUFF Fund. Going forward, this is how we will refer to NIL at Temple)?

There are Temple coaches that understand the vital importance of the TUFF Fund and are vehement in their desire to participate in its promotion. In its very survival. Why are there notany coaches on this panel?

Why isn’t Athletic Director Arthur Johnson not on this vital panel?

Why isn’t their any student athlete on this panel?

How much research has Athletics and/or the BOT done to discover best practices for promoting and working with NILs. Have they looked at other schools? Have they reached out to other athletic departments?

Athletics can’t survive without the success of the TUFF Fund. Period. Full stop. Is Athletics aware of this crucial fact? Is the BOT? If not, why?

Why is development actively working against the TUFF Fund? Why is not development working with the TUFF Fund in promoting how vastly different the fund raising goals are? It is not a “rob Peter to pay Paul” situation.

Does the BOT realize how much disastrous peril Athletics at Temple is in currently? Does the BOT realize the the TUFF FUND is a necessary evil for athletics at Temple to SURVIVE?

Is the BOT aware that the directors of the TUFF Fund operate it a severe personal expense?

The only way the TUFF Fund is successful, the only way athletics at Temple survives, is for all of us to work together.

So, I ask, the BOT (and for the purpose of this call, Athletics), what do you want athletics at Temple to be?

In short:

WHAT IS THE PLAN?
