How much of 2020-21 season....

.....should we take into consideration when looking forward to this season.

TempleJ's comment about Houston being in the Final Four last year - and my comment that it seems like decades ago - got me thinking [pause to insert comments, wise guys].

I really can't take much of last season into consideration as a real gauge of Aaron McKie's ability as coach.

I've tried. I can't.

Yeah, the record was meh (Those of you who want to substitute "abysmal" there, feel free). But I keep thinking about the losses to WSU and Cincinnati being close.

So much of the season was scrambled. Yes, it's the coach's responsibility to have them ready for the way things roll and sudden changes, etc. But there is a certain point where it becomes ridiculous.

As I have said here before, people I know who know basketball like Hicks and Miller. I trust their judgement.

As I also have said here before, I saw White play during both his junior and senior years at Wildwood Catholic. I will go to my grave saying that the reason there was no hype surrounding him, was that he had no AAU season between his junior and senior years. The injury that kept him out of Temple's season last year also kept him out of that AAU season. It seems to be finally repaired as it ought to be.

I truly believe the team will be competitive this year, win more than its share of games and maybe make the NCAAs. No less than the NIT.

And certainly not as rocky as things were last year.

New AD & thinking outside the box

New AD and understanding Temple athletics pros and cons and how we get to where we desire. Instead of thinking how other schools arrived to their desired outcome and becoming a copy cat, how can we (Temple) utilize what we have in front of us and not fit a square peg in a round hole per say.

We desire an on campus facility, other schools have used this to raise the school profile, but in the short and possibly the long term this will not happen at Temple.

What do we have? We have the Linc and the Eagles,. We have a big city and big population with many alum. We have a Pro facility with access to Pro lockers, access to NFL players etc.. How do we take what many think a negative and make it a positive?

My suggestion: We approach the local NFL team that owns their stadium and is always looking for revenue opportunities and formulate a relationship that goes well beyond a lessee lessor relationship. Simply we partner with the Eagles instead of making them an advisory. Share selling the Temple Owl football product as a sudo extension of the Eagles, a new product for the NFL team to sell, Eagles would profit with seat revenue and new advertising revenue, a much more lucrative return then a simple lease. Some say this is may be an NCAA violation but at this time point and time anything goes in new NCAA, realignment, NIL etc...

So many positives could come of this from both sides. Great PR for the Eagles supporting the cities biggest employer and largest university, Temple students gain real world incite to professional sports etc... But it comes down to money for Temple and the Eagles.

Opportunity is front of both entities its just about the logistics and the open minds of both sides.

Its about thinking outside the box. Thoughts?

D’Wan Mathis

As reported by The Inquirer’s Sam Cohn, D’Wan Mathis practiced this week for the first time since his injury in Week 1. Barring anything unforeseen, I’d expect him to start and play today.

What I’m curious to watch for is who, if anybody, replaces Mathis in the event Temple gets up big. Mathis needs all the reps he can get at this point so you may see him play more than you’d usually see a starter play against an FCS opponent.

In the event that Mathis doesn’t play the whole game, keep in mind that Justin Lynch can only play in one more game this season and still redshirt. Rod Carey may want to keep that game in his back pocket. Completely guessing, it wouldn’t surprise me if Mariano Valenti gets in before Lynch today.

Two departures

Iverson Clement is no longer with the team, Rod Carey announced today. Clement hadn't been fully with the team since the summer but, as of last week, Carey said there was a plan to get Clement back in the fold. Obviously something happened over the last seven days that caused that to change. Will pass along anything we hear.

In addition to Clement, Re-Al Mitchell will enter the transfer portal. This one was pretty easy to predict, as Mitchell had fallen to No. 4 on the depth chart, behind three youngers players, and seemed hesitant to switch positions.

Random Thoughts In No Particular Order

OK, so my head is swimming and I am NOT a happy camper. I would like to share some observations and thoughts now that it has been 24 hours for my brain to marinade.

I really loved seeing everyone in Lot K! The tailgate scene was a feast for my hungry senses.
I guess that's where the day should have ended unfortunately.

By the way, PAT KRAFT made his way through Lot K for at least an hour saying hello to everyone. What a great guy.
PRESIDENT WINGARD also did some glad handing but really didn't talk much to anyone.
WHERE WAS DUNPHY? Sorry I had to ask.........

Could it be any more ridiculous and cumbersome trying to get to the new side club level from Lot K? It takes an Uber, a bus and a transfer slip to get to your seat now.

Why is it that I can buy tickets on line from any number of websites that are much better than my season tickets?

Why is it that the only food available in club level was chicken tenders and fries?
More importantly, WHY IS MILLER LITE THE ONLY BEER AVAILABLE????? More on this later........

I could be mistaken, but I don't think Carey talked to a single player on the sideline the entire game.
I have never seen a HC prefer to stand 30 yards from the line of scrimmage on all plays by himself. Very strange.

This team has no heart and very little pulse. In no way are they mentally rpepared to play. I wonder where that comes from?

I know youth league coaches who could have called a better offensive game. We had no chance to move the ball because we were constantly running the wrong way into fronts and throwing route schemes so basic that most high schools no longer utilize them.

I received multiple texts from friends watching on TV and laughing at the lack of people. Things like, "Is this a private viewing for you and a few friends?"
We absolutely need to go back to the other side. Al Golden had it right when he moved the team to the other side more than a decade ago.

I left with a few minutes left when it was clear that any fight the team had was completely gone.

I was thinking WHAT IS THIS TEAM DOING ON THE BAND FIELD......LOVE OUR BAND.

On my way out, THE VENDORS WERE STOCKING ALL THE GOOD BEER AND FOOD FOR THE EAGLES GAME THE NEXT DAY!!

It takes about 20 minutes to find your way back down to Lot K. I was hoping to find a sherpa or two to guide me back....maybe water at a campsite half way down?

Whatever it takes, this whole thing needs fixing yesterday. Carey has to go sooner rather than later.

This whole operation is FUBAR in my reasonable opinion....ship without a rudder.

Sorry for the rant.
