Bill Bradshaw - Thank you

I know we have a lot of Football left to play this year and it won't be easy (there are a lot less gimme's in the next few weeks), but Temple is now is the Top-25, we will have averaged after 4 home games 50k+ people, we will likely be making our second bowl appearance in five years (and third in seven years), and we are in a pretty darn good football conference. I know a lot of thanks and appreciation need to go around, but I'm raising my glass to Bill Bradshaw. He hired Golden, Addazio the caretaker, and Rhule. They all helped get us to where we are today.

Thank you Bill Bradshaw.

P.S. I know we can harp on some other BB decisions, but for the time being I'm focusing on the positive.
PPS. I am also told Ann Weaver Hart was a big sports supporter.

Temple's destinations: bowl game, new stadium

http://www.philly.com/philly/sports...ns__bowl_game__new_stadium.html#disqus_thread

Bob of course needs to include some incorrect facts and potshots in the article:

  • "This was surely a good week for a university that sacrificed five other sports (gymnastics, baseball, softball and indoor and outdoor track) in an effort to bolster its football program to the point where it will fuel public and trustee support for an on-campus stadium."
  • "The Pirates, like eight of the dozen teams that comprise the underrated American Athletic Conference, have an on-campus facility and an average attendance of 44,763 this season. Temple, by contrast, had 35,179 at its Tulane game and 31,372 at its game against Central Florida. There are those who will tell you that those numbers are exaggerated, but somewhere in the neighborhood of 30,000 is a magic number for the Owls because that is roughly the capacity they'd like to have for their field of dreams in North Philadelphia.

Owls +7 vs Eagles, a poll...

Who would prevail?

  • Temple Owls

    Votes: 6 22.2%
  • Philadelphia Eagles

    Votes: 21 77.8%

Folks, in all seriousness, none of us can argue that the Eagles have better athletes at a majority (but not all) positions. However, the schemes are so poorly thought through, especially on offense, in sum, they're terrible. I think I really would take the Owls OL over the Eagles, and I'd probably take our WRs as a group over what the Eagles have.

If you had an offer of Owls +7 over the Eagles, in a "friendly" as soccer people call it, so not a high pressure situation, which way would you go?

Saturday's visitors

We’ve compiled a list of several recruits who were visitors at Saturday’s Temple-UCF game.

The highest-ranked visitors were Imhotep Charer’s Johncarlo Valentin and Naseir Upshur. Valentin, who is ranked by Rivals as a 4-star recruit, is the No. 15 offensive guard in the 2016 class and the No. 7 overall player in the state of Pennsylvania. The 6-foot-5, 335-pound lineman has offers from more than 15 high-major programs, including Auburn, Michigan and UCLA. Upshur, the nation’s No. 4 tight end, is committed to Florida State.

Saturday’s group of visitors also included five players who have already verbally committed to Temple: Jahsen Wint from New York’s Erasmus Hall High School; cornerback Kimere Brown from New Jersey’s Penns Grove High School; Dan Archibong from Springfield High School; wide receiver Kenny Yeboah from Parkland High School and defensive back Kareem Gaulden from New Jersey’s Lincoln High School.

Dual-threat quarterback De’Vante Cross, the guy who throws the ball to Yeboah at Parkland, was also among Saturday’s visitors. He recently committed to Boston College.

Two other visitors - Palmyra High School wide receiver Kelvin Harmon and Camden Catholic safety Tyree Rodgers - have issued verbal commitments to South Carolina and Old Dominion, respectively.

A few other recruits of note:

Sayreville War Memorial High School athlete Lindwood Crump visited, as did Simon Gratz offensive tackle Raquan Thomas (class of 2016), who camped with Temple this past summer.

Matt Hennessy, a 6-4, 275-pound offensive tackle form New Jersey’s Don Bosco Prep who has a Temple offer, was in attendance. He’s a 2016 recruit.

Several class of 2017 players visited as well, including Exeter Township High School weakside defensive end Brett Moyer, who was a guest at Temple’s win over Tulane last week.

And Rancocas Valley High School’s Shaun Bradley, a grayshirt candidate that’s set to enroll in January, was also at the game.

ECU weather

Looks like the high of Thursday will be 78°, with the low in the upper 50s and game time temperature in the upper 60s. A perfect night for football and I'm jealous of all that will be in attendance. Unfortunately for ECU there will be no monsoon this year to help aide in knocking off a ranked team

Why did this win seem like a loss

I guess I'm getting jaded. A win is a win, right? Not when you're tring to become nationally relevant and go to a BCS bowl game. I guess I'm looking ahead. Play this way against ECU, ND, or Memphis and we can kiss our dreams goodbye.
Four turnovers; and not just any turnovers, but two fumbled punts, a center-QB exchange, and an INT after a throw to no one. All unforced errors. All the kind that add up to losses against better teams.
The defense was outstanding, but you can't keep giving the other team field position and expect them to not put some points on the board. Our turnovers led to at least 13 of UCF's 16 points.
On offense, we appeared "brain dead" for much of the game. Why do you run into the line when the defense has 9 men in the box? Dropped passes, passes to nowhere; what gives?
The refs didn't help. Our defense was getting tackled out there and weren't any calls until the very end. Our guy barely touches the DB on Thomas' long run, and we get called for holding. Also the spots were atrocious. They gave the UCF receiver a first down when it was clear on replay that he was two yards short. They moving the ball back after several TU plays especially when we crossed or was on a yard line.
As I said, a win is a win, but to be considered an elite team, we have to play better than this.

Zaire Williams

Zaire Williams' name is again not listed on Temple's roster. Per a source I spoke with today, it seems unlikely that he'll return to the team this season, and I would not venture to guess if he will return next season. I don't believe this to be a disciplinary issue and he was not thrown off the team.

That's all I know at this point.

A few other takeaways from today's presser:

Matt Rhule said he expects Sharif Finch and Will Hayes to play Thursday, as both practiced today, although I did hear Hayes say as he was coming off the field that it still might be a stretch for him to play. It's been helpful, of course, that Temple has developed some depth at that position with the emergence of Nate L. Smith, Delvon Randall and Jyquis Thomas.

Rhule did say that Sean Chandler will probably remain as the team's punt returner, but they're currently trying to find a spark, he said, at the kickoff return specialist spot. He declined to name who is in the mix there when I asked because he said they're looking at a few different options, but I wouldn't be surprised if Ryquell Armstead is in the mix.

Freshman wide receiver Cortrelle Simpson, Rhule said, has been simulating ECU quarterback James Summers during practice on the scout team. Rhule also said Simpson would redshirt this season. Summers is the better runner of the two in ECU's two-quarterback system with 354 rushing yards and six touchdowns.

Thoughts upon film review, UCF edition...

When I compare P.J. this year to last year’s game against Penn State, it just shows how much he’s matured. Vs. PSU, after, I believe the 7th dropped pass, he just started forcing throws which resulted in 4 interceptions. Vs UCF, there were several early drops and the pick six, and P.J. was unshakable. Even after drops by Bryant and Anderson, he went right back to them. Mature, accountable, a leader. Lot to like about this kid!

Jahad Thomas’ 33 yard reception at the start of the second quarter is absolute highlight reel material. Not just outstanding quickness, cutting ability, but that spin move to break a tackle was a tremendous show of athleticism. A minor complaint: He had 31 carries, many of which came after we’d established dominance. He’s got a short week ahead of him and a game where we’re going to need every last bit of talent and ability to win this one. I’d really have liked to have seen more Armstead.

Shahbaz Ahmed is listed at 296, color me skeptical on that number. I’m going to guess he’s 15 or so north of that. He’s a little up and down, getting blown off the line on one play and delivering a devastating pancake the next. One thing is for sure, this big boy can run! How someone that big can get down field so fast to explode his man is hard to understand.

Kyle Friend had his worst game of the season. Not just the flubbed snap in the 3rd quarter that turned be ball over on our side of the field. He was having a tough time in both pass and run blocking and the difficulty locking onto his man on the second level was there. Friend, Dawk, and Ahmed did not have a stellar night screen blocking, and at one point, it looked like P.J. called them out. Leon Johnson had a very nice night at RT, particularly in pass blocking. He was beaten outside on pass rushes early this season, looks like he’s got that locked down.

A Marshall Ellick sighting for the second week in a row. Robbie Anderson looks like he finally knocked the rust off. He really is an amazing athlete, not just the speed, size, vertical, hands but just the fluidity he displays, a pleasure to watch.

I was thinking it’s a shame J.C. isn’t more involved in the passing game, and it occurred to me I think that about Colin Thompson… and Kip Patton, and Bryant, Jennings and Anderson could be used more as well, and I like Thomas coming out of the backfield. There are so many good skill players on this team, they’re really aren’t enough balls to go around. A guy like Keith Kirkwood doesn’t even dress.

I’d love to know the snap counts for Hassan Riddick. At the start of the season he was a depth guy, getting, I’d guess somewhere around 10 per game. He has come further in these six games (excluding some Freshmen/RS) than anyone on this team. He could be a star next year.

If the conversation is about unsung heroes, it’s got to be the DL. The top six haven’t had a ton of sacks since PSU, but they’ve done one heck of a job getting pressure on the opposing QBs all year long.

T Mat’s tackles are down this year, but his interceptions underscore his improvement in the passing game. Earlier, I pointed out that to man him up on a WR, even in the red zone is completely unfair to him. However, he’s shown that in a zone, the ability to diagnose plays that allow him to collect triple digit tackles, allow him to break up passes and pick off passes as well.

I keyed on Tayvon Young quite a bit. The huge cushion he gives is clearly at Snow’s behest. On the occasions where he can play bump and run, he’s very good at it. Very physical, sticky, and doesn’t get fooled. I’d love to know what his QB rating is.

It’s so nice to have a dedicated long snapper and holder as well as a solid kicker and punter. So many times it seemed like that was an after thought, but it really is about 1/3rd of the game, considering the importance of those plays.

I’m going to say it again – yes Champ had the 65 yard punt return. We also blocked a punt and fumbled one. Why can’t we just send ten on every punt and fair catch? I truly think we’d gain more positive yards doing that than trying to set up returns. I have to give a tip of the cap to Ventell Bryant and Cole Boozer for some big time blocks on that return, though.

INTERVIEWS

Jahad Thomas is the best interview on the Owls, IMO.

The kid is very mature and he's really thoughtful. Gives great answers. Doesn't hold anything back. Real philosophical. He'll be 20 in November, but he speaks like an old head. Took the blame for being late for a meeting and said it can't happen again. Seems like a great kid.

Matt Ioannidis is well-spoken, too.

And Armstead is real mature and very humble.

Role Reversal

In a reversal of fortunes , our undefeated and 24th ranked Owls will be visiting a hostile environment this Thursday when they play ECU in their sold out stadium! We know that ECU will be loaded for bird and would like nothing better than to upset our Owls like we upset them at the Linc last year! It goes without saying that we will have to be near flawless to win in Greensville this week and after yesterday's performance nothing is a certainty as the Pirates are 4 and 3 and improving each week! I believe that this game is certainly the most important game of the season!

Thoughts, anyone?

Food mouth

Last night during the game a fan tried to turn around and yell, but had a bunch of popcorn in his mouth. When he went to yell he accidentally spit out all the popcorn all over those around him. It's unforgettable moments like these that make Temple football games so great. It was so funny, and I'd give anything to have that moment on video.
