Needed PR Campaign for Temple Football

As the Eagles season continues to spiral toward a possible crash landing on Monday, it occurred to me that the public’s outrage toward the organization and its product may reach deafening levels in the coming weeks. Despite the hiccups after Doug Pederson was fired, fans haven’t been this pissed at the organization in quite some time.

And if the Eagles lose Monday, the timing might be perfect for a well-orchestrated social media and/or grassroots campaign to draw attention to the outrageous gouging to rent a facility the team doesn’t even f-ing own.

If facts are presented (especially if the Pitt/Steelers/Heinz Field dynamic is accurate), we might be able to get public support and some media to at least ask hard questions. Clearly, nobody at Temple will or should get involved in such a campaign, but why not leverage some misdirected fan anger to our advantage?

Look no further than the Stadium Stompers that forced our chicken shit administration to crawl back into a hole or even a current example, literally from today, where public outrage backed my media support led to the reversal of the plans to remove the William Penn statue in South Philly.

Mailbag questions for this week's episode of The Scoop

Good morning, everyone.

In addition to talking about the men's and women's basketball teams, we'll also be doing what we hope to be an NIL explainer episode with Andrew Hope, a lawyer at Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney who has written about NIL specifics and developments. I know we've obviously talked about it a great deal here on the message boards, but if you have NIL-specific mailbag questions for him for this week's pod in addition to anything you'd like to ask us, please drop it in here by Tuesday at 1 p.m., and we'll answer it on the podcast.

Thanks as always for listening!

Reddick and Impact to Temple Football

His play this season has been incredible. The coaches can clearly point to him for recruits. But as he continues to increase his notoriety as an an Eagle (especially locally in the Philly area), I hope the athletic department is thinking of ways his success can help get people out to games this coming fall. Temple having a big time player with the local NFL team (especially one that grew up in the area) may never happen again.

I don’t pretend to know what should/can/legally be done or what Reddick would agree to (paying him obviously help) but he has been at some basketball games, come back to to talk to the football team after Drayton was hired, is in the T club and has an interview (with Shaun Bradley) now up on the Temple football twitter. Maybe honor him at a game (Norfolk State looks ideal) and hand out those white out t shirts with his Temple number/name on it. Or you get some Reddick give away. Honor Bradley at the same time since he is an Eagle if that makes sense.

Chris Wiesehan interview

As we promised on this week's episode of The Scoop, here's my full 30-minute interview with Chris Wiesehan.

Lots of good stuff here on Mausa Palu, Linus Lindberg, Bryson Goodwin and the 2024 class and more on the returning redshirt freshmen.

Presidential Search

First round interviews should be scheduled in February, according to this official update
Members of the search committee: Temple News.

It appears the aim is to extend an offer this spring. My guess is the new President will start July 1 or thereabouts.

Temple is in dire need of an infusion of strong leadership following Wingard's era of self-idolatry and what's amounted to survival mode following his departure. I have no reason to expect any meaningful change or direction on the athletics front until a new President takes the helm. And while Athletics is far from the biggest challenge Temple faces right now, some highly consequential decisions are looming and let's hope the search committee gives this consideration when vetting candidates.

News and notes

A few things to pass along:

Bobby Jordan was down in DC tonight to watch Gonzaga class of 2025 guard William Harper. He had 15 points in Gonzaga's 69-60 win over DeMatha. We wrote about him back in the fall when Harper, KJ Cochran and eventual signee Aiden Tobiason took an unofficial visit in October.

As far as the current roster, Steve Settle was back with the team today at practice. Barring any setbacks, I'd be surprised if he doesn't play Sunday at Tulane.

Also, Taj Thweatt was back in the facility today. I can't confirm that he'll play Sunday, and that could be based on lineups, game situations and coaching decisions, but it looks like things have trended in the direction of him being back with the team.
