The Scoop: Season 8, Episode 30 - Our interview with John Baum

John was kind enough to spend some time with me prior to Thursday night's game. Great conversation about his life and career, including an anecdote about how Skip Wilson was recruiting him to Temple as he refereed one of John's games at Peirce College.

The interview starts around the 8:55 mark of the pod. Hope you enjoy it.

Lancine Turay made a physical transformation this offseason

Defensive lineman Lancine Turay gained 25 pounds during Temple’s offseason program.

After losing defensive lineman Darian Varner to Wisconsin via the transfer portal, Temple needs a few players in its defensive line room to step up, including Turay.

2024 RECRUITING ACTIVITY

Been following the coaching staff on the recruiting trails for the Class of 2024 and just in the last 24 to 48 hours they must have offered 30 players in THE MD, DC, No VA area footprint. Offering some kids that are even 2025! I love that they are actively going after lineman and mainly kids with multiple FBS offers. The players are really lighting up Twitter with the Temple "][" brand!

The Ground hogs day play.

I feel like under Mckie admin the owls have played in more close games than I can remember. The end play is to just put the ball in Dunns hands. It’s great deja vu. If you watch this video below, it’s like I’ve seen this so many times.
I also see Mckie shouting the and motioning for the ball to go inside but Dunn just seems content doing his own thing and putting up a three.
What am I missing?

Wingard?

I don’t blame him for certain things BUT the responses have generally been poor.
- crime
- TUPA
- grad student union

Theobald over spent but you felt like he had control of things. He came across as a CEO type.

What’s going on at the Temple I love??!

Mailbag questions for The Scoop

Good morning, everyone! We're taking mailbag questions for this week's episode of The Scoop until 2 p.m. today.

The Owls are 1-1 since Khalif Battle has been away from the team for personal reasons. Has the way they've played without him in the lineup changed your outlook with two regular season games left and next month's conference tournament?

We'll talk about that, along with some recruiting updates and anything else you want to put on the agenda.

As always, thanks so much for listening. You can find us and subscribe to The Scoop on any of the major platforms, including Apple Podcasts and Spotify.

Mailbag questions for The Scoop

Good morning, everyone! We're taking mailbag questions for this week's episode of The Scoop until 2 p.m. today.

What position battles are you looking forward to in spring ball when it kicks off next Tuesday? What questions need to be answered? We're here to talk about that and anything else you'd like to put on the agenda.

Spring football coverage: What to expect, new hire coming soon

Temple will conduct its first spring football practice this coming Tuesday, Feb. 28. It's probably the earliest start date I can remember in recent memory.

The Owls will go on a Tuesday-Thursday schedule until the university's spring break, which starts the week of March 6. That will give the team a 12-day break from spring ball.

From there, they'll go on a Tuesday-Thursday-Saturday schedule, with the spring Cherry and White game set for Saturday, April 8.

Reporters will only be given access to the first 15 minutes of practice, which is typically when the players stretch and warm up, so we won't be seeing any practice reps. A coach and two players will be made available to reporters at the end of each session, and Stan Drayton will speak once a week. I'm told we'll get to speak to all of the assistant coaches at least once.

Another source I spoke with yesterday said Drayton is close to hiring his new chief of staff. That position was vacated when Everett Withers, who had a hand in shaping Drayton's first staff on North Broad Street, left to become the assistant head coach and defensive passing game coordinator at Florida Atlantic.

There are several position battles to watch, especially with several midyear enrollees on campus and ready to compete in the coming weeks, like running back, offensive line, wide receiver, safety and backup quarterback, where Ocean Township High School graduate Tyler Douglas will compete for snaps with Quincy Patterson and E.J. Warner. Drayton also said earlier this month that the program hopes to add more depth there.

At safety, Florida transfer Kamar Wilcoxson and Colorado State transfer Tywan Francis will be players to watch as they look to compete for snaps, and fellow Colorado State transfer Dante Wright could make an immediate impact at wide receiver.

Drayton and his staff will also get a spring look at Purdue transfer and kickoff specialist Chris Van Eekeren and new punter Dante Atton.

And of course at running back, Harrisburg High School standout Kyle Williams will get an early start on trying to spark a rushing offense that was among the worst in the country last year. FIU transfer E.J. Wilson could and should be in the mix there, too.

Temple Stadium

All this talk about recruiting gains and the upside of our roster got me to thinking about next steps for the program.

Assuming the commitment from the university is real and the football team continues to improve, I would hope the concept of an on campus stadium is really on the radar. That said does any know the history of why we put the original, Temple Stadium or Beury Stadium, on Mount Pleasant and Michener? Seems we wouldn't be faced with this issue had we made the decision in 1928 to build a stadium on campus…

Been a fan of TU for 40+ years, but not old enough or smart enough to know all the history. I do know, as a student, it was tough to make every home game at the Vet...
