The Scoop with Eagles production manager and former Temple video coordinator Fran Duffy

Fran Duffy, who got his start in football as Al Golden's video coordinator back in 2006, is now a production manager and on-air talent with the Eagles. He hosts the Journey To the Draft and Eagle Eye in the Sky podcasts and breaks down film of former Owls stars and current Eagles like Haason Reddick and Shaun Bradley.

He joined me on The Scoop this week to share memories of his time working on Golden's staff, which included future coaching standouts like Ryan Day, Matt Rhule and new Eagles defensive coordinator Sean Desai. Lots of good Temple football anecdotes and details on players like Reddick, Bradley, Jalen Hurts and new Eagles draft pick Nolan Smith.

Growing pains have defined Steve Settle's success

Finished up a longer feature on Steve Settle. Had a chance to get some insight into Steve's game from Maryland guard Jahmir Young, Settle's former teammate at DeMatha.

Steve Settle commits to Temple

I'll have a longer feature up over the weekend on Steve. We talked for close to a half-hour this morning, so there's a lot more good stuff to share from our conversation, and we'll have some audio of the interview in this week's podcast. Jump into the mailbag question thread if you haven't already to get some in before 2.

Update on Temple's search for its next athletic director

We have confirmed through multiple sources that Arthur Johnson, Texas' associate athletic director for football operations, has emerged as the leading candidate to become Temple's next athletic director.

Johnson has a resume that includes stints at Texas, where he has worked since 2011, Georgia and North Carolina. Among others, he is highly-regarded by current UNC head coach Mack Brown, who worked with Johnson during his first stint with the Tar Heels in the late 1990s.

With Jordan Riley signed, what's next for Temple?

In case you all missed it out on the front page, I caught up with Georgetown transfer Jordan Riley late last night, and you can read the story from our interview here.

Riley becomes the 10th scholarship player on new head coach Adam Fisher's roster, and Temple is set to host Howard transfer forward Steve Settle for a visit that starts tomorrow. Settle, who averaged 11.1 points and 5.7 rebounds for Howard and scored 13 points in the Bison's opening-round NCAA Tournament loss to Kansas, is a priority for the Owls.

Should Settle choose Temple, he'll become the 11th scholarship player on the roster. Fisher will be competing with his former Miami colleague Chris Caputo, now the head coach at George Washington, for Settle.

I've talked to enough sources over the last few days to know where Fisher and his staff would go from there. Instead of recruiting another big, Fisher and his staff would likely pursue another point guard for depth, and it would be a grad transfer or someone with one more year of eligibility. At this point, the staff would not want to get locked in to a transfer with multiple years of eligibility remaining. If you take a player at this point who doesn't pan out, then he would have to sit out a year before leaving again, meaning the Owls might be committed to him for more than a year.

If they get a 12th player, I would not at all be surprised to see Fisher hold that last scholarship for either a midyear transfer for the season to come or roll it over into the 2024 class.

The latest transfer portal recruiting scoop

The latest portal recruiting updates:

UTRGV guard Will Johnston should be arriving tomorrow night for his official visit and staying into Tuesday. He's also considering officials to Cal and Loyola Marymount as well, but Temple sounds like it will be his first visit.

I've talked to a few people now who are more familiar with Boston College transfer DeMarr Langford's game. As we've discussed, he's more of a driver and scorer than a wing guard who looks to shoot from long range. A source familiar with his recruitment told me he's likely setting up his visit to Temple now.

I continue to hear that St. John's transfer Dylan Addae-Wusu will likely decide within the next day or two. It will be between Temple and Seton Hall. As @Kyle Gauss reported earlier this week, Addae-Wusu was more effective for the Johnnies this past season after entering the starting lineup.

I've confirmed that the Temple staff did have a Zoom call recently with former Providence guard Quante Berry, who redshirted this past season. As we've noted before, Berry had a lot of high-major offers throughout his recruitment before signing with Providence.

I believe Temple was mentioned as a possibility for him on Twitter, but I've been able to confirm that the Owls' staff is interested in 6-foot-11 USF transfer Dok Muordar. He played sparingly this past season as a freshman and posted career-highs of seven points and 12 minutes against Cincinnati back on Feb. 11.

This weekend's visitors

I know it's been reported on Twitter by a few outlets, but we've been able to confirm that Boston College transfer DeMarr Langford visited Temple, and Georgetown transfer Jordan Riley should be in for a visit this weekend.

The Owls are at nine scholarship players now following this week's addition of Providence transfer Quante Berry.

Some of you have asked for confirmation on names of any big men they're recruiting. We're aware of at least one but just triple checking to confirm.

More recruiting updates and notes

Hi, everyone! Hope you're all staying healthy, happy, safe and sane out there. Once again, I can't tell you how much we all appreciate your support of the site during what we know is a difficult and hectic time. Once we return to some semblance of normal life and games resume, I hope to meet and connect with more of you in person.

Here are some more basketball news and notes on this Thursday morning.

1. I was told yesterday that Simeon High School guard Jeremiah Williams could announce his decision as soon as tomorrow, almost two weeks before the April 22 date he put out on Twitter. So that would line up with the hint Quincy Ademokoya dropped today on Twitter. These things are always fluid, of course, but I'd be surprised if he waits until the 22nd to announce.

2. If/when Williams commits to Temple, Aaron McKie and his staff could conceivably be done if Nate Pierre-Louis decides to return for his senior season. At the outset of the week, the Owls had nine players solidly in the fold. Khalif Battle became the 10th, Sage Tolbert became the 11th, Williams could become the 12th and Pierre-Louis would become the 13th.

A source I spoke with yesterday believes Pierre-Louis is simply trying to use the resources available to him to gain feedback on his game from the next level. Again, I did reach out for an interview request to talk to Nate, but I was told he wasn't doing interviews and wanted to let his statement stand as is, which is fine. I respect that. I think we can all say with no ill will intended that the chances of Pierre-Louis getting drafted are highly unlikely, and I've also been told by a source that he's also saying all the right stuff to his teammates and coaches throughout the process.

if you read the social media tea leaves, which is about all we can do in addition to talking to other sources since he's not talking on the record, it looks like Pierre-Louis is expressing excitement about Battle, Tolbert and the Nike news, so he's staying engaged. The possibility always remains that he could maybe graduate by August and grad transfer or go overseas to start his career, but I don't know how likely that is as of now. As always, we'll see.

3. As you might imagine, I have't seen Tolbert play live. I asked someone I trust to describe his game, and that source described Tolbert as a mix between Houston forward Fabian White and Cincinnati forward Tre Scott.

If that holds true, then Temple has landed itself a pretty good player.

Scott was named the American's Defensive Player of the Year and Most Improved Player of the Year and averaged a double-double of 11.4 points and 10.5 rebounds per game. He dominated Temple to the tune of 7-12 shooting, 16 points and 11 rebounds in Philly, and you might recall that he put home the game-winning tip-in at the buzzer out in Cincy after it looked like J.P. Moorman had sealed the game with his 3-pointer.

White averaged 9.3 points and 5.5 rebounds per game this season. He hit double-digit rebounding totals four times this season, including a season-high 14 in the regular-season finale against Memphis.

So the common denominators with White and Scott are rebounding, effort and athleticism. If shooting is need No. 1 for the Owls, rebounding and effort in the paint are 1a. Pierre-Louis (8.5 per game) was Temple's leading rebounder, followed by Moorman (5.1 rpg.) and Quinton Rose (5.0 rpg.) I think we've only seen a sample size of what Jake Forrester can do, but rebounding (3.8 rpg.) is an obvious area where he needs to improve as a 6-8 forward who transferred to Temple with high-major athletic ability.

The question with Tolbert and Battle, of course, is whether or not Temple can get waivers for them to play as soon as this coming season. We'll have to see how that plays out.
