Hi, everyone! Hope you're all staying healthy, happy, safe and sane out there. Once again, I can't tell you how much we all appreciate your support of the site during what we know is a difficult and hectic time. Once we return to some semblance of normal life and games resume, I hope to meet and connect with more of you in person.
Here are some more basketball news and notes on this Thursday morning.
1. I was told yesterday that Simeon High School guard
Jeremiah Williams could announce his decision as soon as tomorrow, almost two weeks before the April 22 date he put out on Twitter. So that would line up with the hint
Quincy Ademokoya dropped today on Twitter. These things are always fluid, of course, but I'd be surprised if he waits until the 22nd to announce.
2. If/when Williams commits to Temple,
Aaron McKie and his staff could conceivably be done if
Nate Pierre-Louis decides to return for his senior season. At the outset of the week, the Owls had nine players solidly in the fold.
Khalif Battle became the 10th,
Sage Tolbert became the 11th, Williams could become the 12th and Pierre-Louis would become the 13th.
A source I spoke with yesterday believes Pierre-Louis is simply trying to use the resources available to him to gain feedback on his game from the next level. Again, I did reach out for an interview request to talk to Nate, but I was told he wasn't doing interviews and wanted to let his statement stand as is, which is fine. I respect that. I think we can all say with no ill will intended that the chances of Pierre-Louis getting drafted are highly unlikely, and I've also been told by a source that he's also saying all the right stuff to his teammates and coaches throughout the process.
if you read the social media tea leaves, which is about all we can do in addition to talking to other sources since he's not talking on the record, it looks like Pierre-Louis is expressing excitement about Battle, Tolbert and the Nike news, so he's staying engaged. The possibility always remains that he could maybe graduate by August and grad transfer or go overseas to start his career, but I don't know how likely that is as of now. As always, we'll see.
3. As you might imagine, I have't seen Tolbert play live. I asked someone I trust to describe his game, and that source described Tolbert as a mix between Houston forward
Fabian White and Cincinnati forward
Tre Scott.
If that holds true, then Temple has landed itself a pretty good player.
Scott was named the American's Defensive Player of the Year and Most Improved Player of the Year and averaged a double-double of 11.4 points and 10.5 rebounds per game. He dominated Temple to the tune of 7-12 shooting, 16 points and 11 rebounds in Philly, and you might recall that he put home the game-winning tip-in at the buzzer out in Cincy after it looked like J.P. Moorman had sealed the game with his 3-pointer.
White averaged 9.3 points and 5.5 rebounds per game this season. He hit double-digit rebounding totals four times this season, including a season-high 14 in the regular-season finale against Memphis.
So the common denominators with White and Scott are rebounding, effort and athleticism. If shooting is need No. 1 for the Owls, rebounding and effort in the paint are 1a. Pierre-Louis (8.5 per game) was Temple's leading rebounder, followed by Moorman (5.1 rpg.) and Quinton Rose (5.0 rpg.) I think we've only seen a sample size of what Jake Forrester can do, but rebounding (3.8 rpg.) is an obvious area where he needs to improve as a 6-8 forward who transferred to Temple with high-major athletic ability.
The question with Tolbert and Battle, of course, is whether or not Temple can get waivers for them to play as soon as this coming season. We'll have to see how that plays out.
