Seeing Jay Norman last week reminded me of him working with Ramon Rivas back in the eighties. I guess Shawn Trice works with the Temple front court player. The remainder of the staff were guards in their playing days. Watching our bigs play is not too impressive. Bond is pretty effective, but he played two years at Texas. Should Temple be looking for another assistant who knows the inside game?

State of TUMBB anecdote

A quick anecdote regarding the state of TUMBB...

I was with John Lucas yesterday. Lucas was a former NBA player, Sixers coach, drug addict, etc. He is now deep in the recruiting circuit. We were talking and he asked if I was coming to the Final Four in Houston (which is where he lives). I said only if Temple is playing in it. He said, "Didn't they just lose to U of H? What happened to them?"

On a side note, I watched Dwyane Wade's son play. Legit.

Senior Bowl

This from Dallascowboys.com (ex-NFL scout Bryan Broaddus):

Scout's Eye: Names To Know For Wednesday's Senior Bowl Practice

  • With the pads coming on for Wednesday’s practices, keep an eye on Temple linebacker Tyler Matakevich -- especially in the 9-on-7 drills. Matakevich and Missouri’s Kentrell Brothers are tackling machines. I can almost guarantee that, when they’re on the field, both of these players will be in the pile the majority of the snaps.
  • A defensive linemen that jumped out from Tuesday's practice that I need to keep an eye on today is Temple defensive tackle Matt Ioannidis. Ioannidis measured in at 6-4, 303 pounds and was extremely active during the North practice. There were several snaps where he was in the backfield playing the run as well as working off blocks rushing the passer. Like his teammate, Ohio State’s Adolphus Washington, both were extremely disruptive.

Why are people so surprised?

We win some big games and lose some awful games. It's who we are now. If you were looking at a chart of our program, you'd see a flat trajectory with some outliers above the line and some below the line. But in the end, mthe trajectory is still flat. It's been that way for a long time now. The problem is that things are not likely to change under the current regime and every year that goes by is another year further removed we are from the Temple legacy. We are a middle rung program getting further mired in mediocrity.

Rotation

I like the fact that Dunphy has finally realized that, for the most part, talented kids need to play no matter what college year they are in. He's actually going 10 deep. I am not sure if Big Earn wasn't fully recovered from injury, was out of shape, wasn't ready to go, but I'm glad he's playing now. Moving Coleman to the bench in a Vinny "Microwave" Johnson type role has paid off. I think he has found a role for Dingle (another guy that can create offense). Frankly, the early starting lineup was bad because about the only guy that could create his own offense was DeCosey. Now Lowe can slash or get baskets off steals and Earn can help on the boards (as much as I still like Obi his rebounding numbers are atrocious). Then Obi, Dingle and Coleman give you some bench spark. My only issue is Alston should be getting some more minutes. He showed flashes and like Lowe didn't excel until he saw meaningful minutes; can't get into a rhythm coming in for 4 minutes in the first half.
