Bowl Projections

Going into the last weekend of the regular season, it appears that several major conferences will not meet their bowl obligations. The SEC has at least 10 bowl commitments, but assuming Georgia/ Alabama and LSU are in the CFP, they only have 8 eligibile teams. The Big 12: 6 for 7, the ACC: 7 for 11 (could be 9 for 11 if both BC and UNC win their last games, the Big 10: 7 for 9 unless Mich St. wins, PAC12: 7 for 6, but could be 9 for 6 if both Oregon St. and Colorado win.
So it looks like their will be openings for G6 teams to play in better bowl games.
Right now, Temple is projected to play in the Cure vs Georgia St. (College Footbal News), Frisco vs So. Miss. (Bleacher report), Boca Raton vs W. Mich (Athlon), and Military vs Louisville (ESPN) or Indiana (Yahoo).
The good news is that we're going bowling regardless of where! Stay tuned

If we get a chance to play in a game in a location that won't come up again ever or for a long time, we should take it. Unless that location is Shreveport. And it's 2018. Never again.

Go up against a power conference whenever you can get the opportunity. I dont care if it's in Duluth MN at the end of December.

And we can count on your attendance in Duluth, MN, right? Okay. Got it. Didn't think so. You'll watch on TV … if it's at a convenient time for you.

I think the schools do get some input. Rhule said that his players wanted the Boca Raton Bowl and that's what they got. It will be nice to see what the Owls can do with all their players and the same coaches for a change.

I could be wrong but I don't think we have any shot at the Military Bowl. I would imagine we're looking at a Florida bowl on 12/21 i.e. Cure or Boca.

The Cure is a good location but arguably the lowest profile bowl out there so hopefully Temple goes somewhere else. It is one of two bowls televised by CBS Sports so it will barely register any ratings. The opponent is supposed to be the Sun Belt so if App State goes there, it would make the game worthwhile but would think they get a higher profile game.

The Boca Bowl is on ABC at 3:30 Saturday the 21st while the Gasparilla Bowl is at 2:30 on ESPN Monday the 23rd. They will garner much higher ratings.

I was thinking the same thing but Cincy went last year. They prob lost to Memphis again - and bowls usually dont like to send the same team back to back years. AAC prob wouldn't send SMU and not home team Navy - that leaves Temple or UCF for Military

Whatever man. You're the one being selfish and only going to a bowl that is at a destination you like. Think long term. P5 wins give a team credibility no matter their record. The AAC, Temple itself, all the talking heads, all quote wins against P5 schools constantly. Take that matchup whenever we can get it.

Would love to see us in the Military Bowl on a weekday. That's an easy drive for me, and we would not have to worry about lodging. For the last game we played at the Naval Academy, I found that for football season, to get someplace within walking distance, it was like West Point's football season. It was hard to find any available place, and the cost was very, very high. For West Point, you have to find a place a year in advance. Of course, for two years, I went to every home game since we lived on post and could walk from our quarters to the stadium (fifty yard line tickets and Kosher food at the tailgate courtesy of the West Point Jewish Chapel Committee)

Isn't the Military Bowl the exception to this?

Yes, the Military Bowl has a Board of Directors that chooses who it wants from its conference tie-ins. Most other bowls are at the mercy of the networks.

If I was a betting man, I'd bet on being in Florida.

ESPNs Kyle Bonagura and Mark Schlabach have Temple in the following:

Bonagura - Tropical Smoothie Cafe Frisco Bowl

Temple vs. San Diego State

Schlabach - Cheribundi Boca Raton Bowl

Ohio vs. Temple

Both have Navy in the Military Bowl.

Haven’t seen even one potential matchup with any of those Florida bowls that is remotely exciting.
The AAC doesn’t slot their bowls by how teams finish but Temple is the 6th team out of 7 eligible. Last year, Temple was 3rd or 4th (and UCF went to the Access Bowl) so they got a P5 opponent in a bowl. So while the Military Bowl probably prefers Temple over SMU or UCF due to proximity, how do you send those teams to Florida against the MAC after winning 9 or 10 games and destroying Temple? Every AAC team wants to play a P5 team in a bowl (except a 10 win Temple team in 2015 for some reason) but the conference only has so many of those and somebody has to go to these Florida bowls.

Memphis will go to the Access Bowl if they win this weekend which basically slides everybody up a level with Memphis no longer part of the AAC tie ins (but I think Boise goes over Cincy if they both win). Separately, ESPN also gets a large say in many of the AAC bowls as they own a bunch of them.

As of now, I would again say that I would expect Temple to end up either at the Boca Raton Bowl or the Gasparilla Bowl. If I start getting indications to the contrary, I'll certainly let you all know.

I appreciate your post and Kyle’s reference to it on the pod, but I understand perfectly how it works. (And I know that probably sounds snarky but it’s not). It just doesn’t excite me, that’s all I’m saying.

Looks like ESPN and Yahoo had the right bowl, wrong teams.
