Kickoffs

If you watched the USF game you witnessed ABYSMAL kickoffs by Temple and EXTREMELY POOR kickoff coverage. The Owls repeatedly allowed USF to work with a short field due to long run backs.

You can not tell me there is not one athlete at Temple University that can not drive a kick off through the end zone on a regular basis. The coaches have to go find that guy. He may be playing on the soccer team, a club team, a rugby team or maybe just working on conditioning.

Obviously if the ball is kicked through the end zone on the kickoffs it doesn't matter how poorly the kickoff coverage team is. Maybe the kickoff coverage team gets better, but I highly doubt it.

Solution: KICK THE BALL THROUGH THE END ZONE!!! GO FIND THE GUY WHO CAN GET THIS DONE!!!

GO OWLS!

Post-Rhule Collins Commits (2017)

I was thinking about this a little last year, and then a lot after yesterday's game so I looked it up to be sure. Collins got 4 commits in the class immediately after he got hired. The first was Malik Burns, womp womp. Then, over the span of 6 days, according to this site, he got commitments from Ebikete, Braswell, and Maijeh. Pretty impressive return on end of the class guys after a coaching change. Also the last guy to commit to Rhule and still sign appears to be... Jadan Blue. Not many contributions from the rest of the class. Interesting how things work out!

Owls in the NFL - Roster Projections

By 4pm Saturday, NFL teams need to get their rosters down to 53 players. In anticipation of that, I sought out roster projections on the 28 former Temple players that were in NFL camps as of this week. Most of these projections came from The Athletic's team writers but I also went to a number of other sources for players that were firmly on the bubble. Obviously these are just projections and not the actual roster decisions but I think they serve as a good idea of how the former Owls are doing.

Temple to Phase in Fans in Stands for Home Football Games

Here's the university's official announcement:

Temple to Phase in Fans in Stands for Home Football Games

PHILADELPHIA – With the city of Philadelphia’s announcement today (Oct. 13) permitting a limited number of fans at outdoor sporting events, Temple University will begin a phased approach to sell tickets to Owls football games.

For Saturday’s home-opener against USF (12 pm/ESPN+/97.5 The Fanatic), complimentary tickets will only be provided for families of Temple Football players and coaches. This will provide the University and its medical team time to monitor the event for health and safety before selling tickets to the general public.

If all goes well, Temple Athletics will then offer a prorated three-game season ticket plan for games on November 5 (SMU), November 21 (ECU), and November 28 (Cincinnati).

Temple fans who renewed their season tickets for the 2020 Owls season will be given priority on the purchase of the limited number of seats available for the team’s three November games.

Dissecting Temple’s loss vs. Navy

Rod Carey offered his thoughts and insight on Temple’s 31-29 loss to Navy on Saturday night. Carey also had some injury updates available, but expects everyone to be back healthy for Game 2 vs. USF.

Here’s the latest from the two Sams.

Roster Attrition

As we've discussed over the last few months, Temple has been over the scholarship limit and will need to get down to 85 scholarships prior to preseason camp. This happens every year and a handful of players inevitably move on due to a number of factors, including injury, playing time concerns and sometimes just general desire to be elsewhere. You already saw it earlier this offseason with the departures of Toddy Centeio and Keyvone Bruton. Well, that process hasn't slowed down.

OwlScoop.com has learned that a trio of scholarship JUCO players are no longer with the program. BUBO Mahmud Dioubate, OL JD Gomez and DE Nickolos Madourie have left the program.

Dioubate, the younger brother of former Temple DL Karamo Dioubate, was Rod Carey's lone spring signee last year. Dioubate played quarterback at Bartram but received very little FBS recruiting interest and then enrolled at Garden City CC in Kansas. Following a redshirt season at linebacker for Garden City, Dioubate signed with Temple in February 2019 but unfortunately missed the entire 2019 season with an injury.

Gomez was a 3-star OL prospect from ASA Miami and committed to Geoff Collins' program as part of the 2018 class over an offer from Old Dominion. Gomez played on the field goal unit and saw a handful of OL snaps in some blowouts last year.

Madourie had 15.5 sacks in junior college in 2017 but never came close to matching that production at Temple. Madourie missed the 2018 season with an injury and only played 15 snaps, all against Bucknell, during the 2019 season.

As of right now, I have Temple at 86 scholarships. So there should be at least one more departure, unless my scholarship chart is off by one.

New Recruiting Story: Raleigh Collins

I spoke with Neumann Goretti High School Class of 2022 cornerback Raleigh Collins, regarding his current recruitment and recent Temple offer. While Collins holds offers from Oregon, Penn State, Pitt, Ole Miss, West Virginia, UConn, Cincinnati and Boston College, he told me that Temple and Penn State were the two schools that are recruiting him the hardest.

Gameday preview: Navy

Temple's season opener is finally here, and we've got you covered with @SamNeumann's comprehensive gameday preview.

I wasn't able to be on this week's podcast with the Sams and @Kyle Gauss, who made his welcomed return to the pod, but the guys did predictions and all have Temple winning this one. As Kyle said, maybe the line is telling us something - although I see the Owls are 3.5-point favorites now and I think that's as high as it's been all week - but I think Temple wins this game by at least two scores, be it two touchdowns or a touchdown and a field goal.

Could they be rusty and a bit out of synch because of the unusual offseason and delayed start? Sure. At the same time, they've had much more time to prepare and I think they have too much talent on both sides of the ball to lose this game.
