I remember reading Matt Rhule saying he did some soul searching after the PSU loss at Beaver Stadium his second season. He went to mass the next day had some alone time and started to realize his program lacked an identity and he was trying to do too much. They went on to establish a strong defense in seasons 3 and 4, and get away from away a heavy spread offense. It worked.
