In case you missed our updates on Twitter, right guard Vince Picozzi had season-ending surgery today, Rod Carey said during today's American Athletic Conference coaches' call. He said the competition to fill his starting spot is "wide open."
Carey also told me he's "hopeful" of running back Re'Mahn Davis playing Saturday against Tulane.
Benny Walls' status, on the other hand, is still up in the air.
When I asked him why Isaiah Wright did not see a single snap on offense last Thursday and only played on special teams, this was Carey's response:
"Well, the way he moved around today and practiced today, I think his body certainly feels better,” Carey said. “He’s in there competing. I would expect him to earn it this week and get back out there. He’s a good football player and we like using him. That would be my hope and the expectation.”
When asked if Wright being limited to return duties and not playing offensive snaps was injury-related or a result of being outworked by his fellow receivers, Carey said, “There was a lot of competition out there. A lot. And I think the combination of maybe how his body was feeling and how he worked in practice, the combination of that led to that last Thursday. So it’s probably a combination of both this week as well going forward. So I wouldn’t point to one thing. That’s a good room we’ve got at wide receiver and there’s a lot of good football players.”
