The weirder it seems to me that something other than the obvious (hire one of the other finalists) is going on. Yes, I realize it’s only been 24 hours and this broke around 90 minutes before NYD, but the discussions have to be fascinating:
1. “Sure, Pat. We just got $4M on top of $2.5M, but also nationally embarrassed. How do we not make the same mistake in 12 or 24 months?”
2. Are there new candidates in the mix that weren’t before for whatever reason?
3. If he doesn’t get the job, does Fran stay? Does Infante? (Really feel for him, but I’m sure he won’t be without offers).
4. If we hire a “name” coach like Schiano (not advocating it), I can only imagine the >12 month buyout will be. $5M? $7.5M?
I know some people like to rip Kraft, but I think he’s done a great job. And I can’t tell you who I think is the right choice, but for the people saying Fran isn’t ready, there’s a 32 year-old coaching the Rams, and even after two seasons, do we really know that Collins was that good of a coach? From my narrow (not insider) perspective, I think he was a better CEO than coach. As far as Fran goes, sometimes you just have to take a chance on a guy. But if he doesn’t get it, there has to be some very serious reservations about his ability to lead and manage.
Sorry, this reads like a rambling Saturday night post after one too many beers or old fashions, but it’s a fascinating time. Go Owls.
