Sitting at 3-3, this team has underperformed by most of our expectations. Matt was very confident in the preseason saying this was a very good football team. I am starting to think that was more of a confidence building tactic than an actual observation by Matt.
Just some thoughts:
1. There really is a leadership void and I am kind of shocked I didn't see this coming. The leaders that were lost last year not only lead on the field, but off it. You are asking PJ and some of these other seniors to lead when they really didn't have to be that person for 3-4 years. Need some young players to start taking the leadership role moving forward.
2. There is some good young talent on this team. Being young brings mistakes and lapses though. Playing these guys is going to pay off in the years to come.
3. OC play calling has not been great. Many people are blaming PJ for the sack right before the pick 6. I actually blame Glenn Thomas for that. Game was just tied up and you knew Memphis was going to play aggressive on defense. Why not a screen or a misdirection play. Instead, they calling a slow developing play action.
4. 6 games remaining. If Temple can win 2 of the next 3 (UCF, USF, Cincy) it sets up the possibility of still finishing 8-4. The back end schedule of UConn, Tulane, ECU is very favorable. 8-4 (6-2) in conference is about where I thought this team would be.
