I was at last night's Timber Creek @ Williamstown game. Creek blew out Williamstown by a score of 35-10.
That means I did get a look at Temple commit Kyle Dobbins, who's making an impact on defense. Dobbins was primarily a running back in his three years at Saint Augustine Prep, but the switch in schools has given him an opportunity to start at safety.
Dobbins finished with just three carries for nine yards and a touchdown. He also grabbed one reception for six yards.
But on defense, Dobbins came up with a diving interception in the fourth quarter. Coach Rob Hinson estimated that Dobbins is Creek's leading tackler on the season.
"He has done a good job for us, especially not playing defense for the last few years," Hinson said after the game. "He has been playing both ways. I think he might be our leading tackler - or right there. That speaks volumes to him. He's sacrificing yardage on offense and picking it up on defense for us."
When asked if Dobbins could have a future on defense at the next level, Hinson said, "he's a running back." In the right scheme, Dobbins could see some time at safety.
North Carolina State quarterback commit Devin Leary, who lost his grandfather Monday, became New Jersey's all-time leader in passing yards (8,776) and tied the state record for passing touchdowns (96). Leary was 20 of 34 for 277 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. He also ran five times for 79 yards and a touchdown.
Coach Rob Hinson said Leary could be the best quarterback in South Jersey high school football history.
“He has a stronger arm than (former NFL quarterback and Cherry Hill East standout) Glenn (Foley),” Hinson said. “He’s definitely more athletic than Glenn. He’s at another level, man.”
Hinson was familiar with Foley, the brother of Temple tight ends coach Ed Foley, from his playing days at Camden High School.
