I took a quick look this morning, hoping to convince myself that Dunphy has a chance to get to a Sweet 16 with the current players, plus the class of 2017. There are 22 active coaches, that anybody may have heard, of who are over 60 when this season started. 4 of them have never been to a Sweet 16: Rick Byrd (Belmont), Gary Waters (Cleveland State), Mike Dunleavy (Tulane), who won 613 NBA games and is in his 1st season in college and Dunphy. Not exactly a fantastic group!
The other 18 coaches who have been to at least 1 Sweet 16 are as follows:
McKillop (Davidson) - 1 Elite 8
Eustachy (Colorado State) - 1 Elite 8
Coach K- 5 National Championships, 3 runner ups, 3 Final Fours, 2 Elite 8's and 9 Sweet 16's
Leonard Hamilton - 2 Sweet 16's and a long NBA career
Kelvin Sampson - a Final 4, Elite 8 and Sweet 16
Al Skinner ( Kennesaw St) - 1 Sweet 16
Pitino - 2 NC's, 1 Runner up, 4 Final 4's, 5 Elite 8's and 1 Sweet 16
Tubby Smith (Memphis) - 1 NC, 3 Elite 8's and 5 Sweet 16's
Jim Larranaga - 1 Final 4 and 2 Sweet 16's
Beilein - 1 runner up, 2 Elite 8's and 1 Sweet 16
Roy Williams - 2 NC's, 3 runner ups, 3 Final 4's, 4 Elite 8's and 5 Sweet 16's
Izzo- 1 NC, 1 runner up, 5 Final 4's 2 Elite 8's and 4 Sweet 16's
Lon Kruger - 2 Final 4's, 1 Elite 8 and 1 Sweet 16
Martelli - 1 Elite 8 and 1 Sweet 16
Steve Fisher - 1 NC, 2 runner ups, 1 Elite 8 and 2 Sweet 16's
Boeheim - 1 NC, 2 runner ups, 2 Final 4's 2 Elite 8's and 11 Sweet 16's
Ernie Kent - 2 Elite 8's
Huggins - 2 Final 4's 4 Elite 8's and 7 Sweet 16's
For those of you scoring at home, the Non-Dunphy group of 18 coaches has: 16 National Championships, 16 Runners Up, 28 Final 4's, 30 Elite 8's and 56 Sweet 16's.
This isn't that tough to make 1 run, is it? How many guys have their 1st run at 69 or 70? I really don't feel any better.
Please help me be optimistic!
