Last year's inaugural game of Marshall vs NIU drew less than 15,000 (announced was 29,000 despite the game being less than half full) with each team getting 7,500 tickets, then 5,000 tickets going to the corporate sponsors.

Marshall was coming off a historic 12-1 season.
