I can’t heap enough praise on the true freshman offensive lineman from Episcopal Academy in Newtown Square.
This time last year, the Springfield (Delco) resident was playing against kids from Conwell-Egan, Monsignor Bonner, the Hill School, Malvern Prep, Penn Charter, Haverford School, Salesianum, etc. Now, he’s the starting right tackle for the Owls, playing big-time Division I football.
I’m sure Klein hasn’t been perfect, and I don’t know how the 6-5, 264-pounder (he’s supposedly up to almost 290) is grading out each week in the Pro Football Focus stuff, but you have to be impressed with his effort.
I believe he’s started the last five games, and he’s played in all eight contests this season. He’s one of just 15 offensive linemen in the country to start as a true freshman.
I saw him play twice for the Churchmen last year, in a win over Conwell-Egan early in the season and in a win over Haverford School late in the season. He was outstanding in those games, but he wasn’t facing guys like Zach Allen each week.
The experience Klein is getting, along with fellow true freshman OT Isaac Moore, the 6-7, 300-pound Swede who is seeing time at LT, is priceless.
We’re redshirting a few freshmen linemen, and we have four OL verbals for next year. And OT Jaelin Robinson and OT James McHale are the only “key” seniors we’ll lose to graduation.
I love it that Coach Collins is making it a priority to recruit both sides of the line.
