Houston preview

i was looking ahead to the Houston game by comparing our stats. But I realized that while UH has far better team numbers than the Owls, they haven't played anyone on their way to a 10-2 record. They have yet to play a team with an RPI under 100. That is until they face us. Their two losses were to Rhode Island and Grand Canyon. Their SOS is 341, worst in the AAC. Look at their schedule and imagine how a similar one would play with Temple fans.

2016 away games

Temple, as most teams, play better at home than they do away.., three of the four games we lost this year were outside the friendly confines of the Linc.., the 2016 away schedule is loaded with should wins..., UCF, Memphis and Tulane will be in transition years, and we always play well against UCONN so it comes down to the third game off the year against PSU..,

no doubt they will be jacked up at home, and Franklin is hearing the noise.., good news is playing Army and Stony Brook before PSU means we won't have to expose our hand and should be able to pull a few new looks and plays..., worrisome is PSU's new OC who has beaten us with inferior talent while at Fordham..,

PSU is the 'moment' game early in 2016. our game w/PSU is sandwiched between their games w/Pitt and Michigan.., and we play three of the first four 2016 games at home.., we could not have written a better script..,

Beat PSU, again

This weekend's recruiting visitor

Temple is getting a visit this weekend from 6-foot-7, 225-pound Australian wing forward Jack White, who has played at the U17 and U19 World Championships for Australia. White told OwlScoop that he's expected to arrive in Philadelphia Thursday night and is also visiting Boise State and Hawaii on this trip.

White graduated high school almost three weeks ago, would enroll at his school of choice in May or June and be part of the 2016 recruiting class.

White is generally regarded as one of the top young players in Australia, and here's a look at some highlights.

White went to Lake Ginninderra College, his Australian high school, where his team recently won the National Schools Championship. He averaged around 25 points, 13 rebounds and 2 assists in that tournament. He also plays for the Basketball Australia Centre of Excellence in the SEABL, where White said he averaged around 12 points, 8 boards and 2 assists.

White has also represented Victoria, his home state, since under 16's at the National Championships as well, winning gold this year in the under-20 competition, and he's hoping to do the same again in February. He has also been a scholarship holder at the Australian Institute of Sport for the last 18 months.

What Is The Problem This Year?

The answer might surprise a little bit. Last year the Owls were 26-11. If not for that Will Cummings injury vs. Tulsa, which led directly to that home loss and then indirectly to the next game loss vs. SMU, the Owls were probably playing in the NCAAs in March.

Now, haters gonna hate hate hate and the long time anti-Dunphy contingent will come on here and trot out the same old stuff. To be fair, though, the Owls of 14-15 were probably a tournament team. At the very least, they were a team that we thought was fun and gave us a nice March run, albeit not in the tournament we wanted.

Ok, now to the point. The pitchforks are out for Dunphy (me included) this year based on Xs and Os and the offensive incompetence. However, if you look at the numbers, the KenPom Offensive Efficiency numbers are nearly identical this year to last year. In the 140s, ranking wise, and 103ish rating wise. This surprised me because of how bad the offense has looked this season. The biggest difference actually is on defense - last year the Owls ended up 18, at 93.4 rating. This year they are 91 at 98.8 rating. There are some other details around the margin, but that right there is your difference maker. Can the offense be better? Absolutely. It is painful to watch. But at least according to the numbers, the defense is the bigger problem this year.
