OT: Philly Fans

This comes up often on our boards, so thought I would share.

It has been confirmed by Fred Roggin of NBC news in LA...an irate Dodger fan punched the George Washington mascot in the face at tonight’s game and was arrested.

See.........Philly fans are unfairly singled out - all fans are nuts!

Boise's schedule is a joke

Except for Florida State, who is not very good this year, Boise plays no one. Their OOC schedule looks like it was made up by "Cupcakes R Us". Their league has no ranked teams or even teams with votes. One loss and they must be out of the running for a NYD bowl with that schedule.
I don't see how they can be ranked ahead of SMU, Cincy and Memphis.

Randle Jones and Linwood Crump updates

Rod Carey talked on today's American Athletic Conference teleconference about the statuses of cornerback Linwood Crump and wide receiver Randle Jones, both of whom have been out with injuries since the season opener against Bucknell. Crump was incorrectly listed on last Thursday's participation report and did not play.

Both players, Carey said, could ultimately redshirt, but that's a decision that doesn't have to be made at any certain time and is fluid as the season progresses.

"I don't think we'll really address that," Carey told me when I asked him about Jones. "There's always a chance, right? But you've got to get healthy first and then you've got to see when that occurs, and then you kind of plug all that in. And certainly some of those conversations have started already. Randle and I are on the same page about it and we'll just go forward as we see."

As for Crump, he did practice today, Carey said.

"I think we're getting a lot closer to his return, and then we go ahead," Carey said. "And when he's ready to go - Linwood and I have obviously talked and we're on the same page as well - we'll address that as needed when he gets back. But really, until he gets back, it's not a question to completely (answer.) Because you can say, OK, yeah, let's redshirt, and then you get a bunch of guys dinged and then you're not redshirting. And then you could say you're not redshirting and then he never gets back and then all of a sudden, it's a redshirt. So it's not something to go ahead and really answer until we're back and healthy."

Cornerback Ty Mason, a player who could ultimately provide some depth without Crump in the lineup, did not make the trip to ECU Thursday night. Carey said it was due to an injury.

"He's working his way back and hopefully we'll see him on the practice field here this week and he'll be ready to go," Carey said.

CBS Sports Top 130

Before today’s games, we are ranked 41st.

6 AAC teams are in the top 42

UCF, SMU, Memphis, Cincinnati, TU, Tulane

Next 3 up are Top 25 to Top 27, depending on the poll being checked out.

All big tests. Yes, we’re 4 - 1. But if we want to be known as a player this season, taking at least 2 of 3 and being bowl eligible on or before the end of play vs UCF on Oct. 26th will be a beautiful thing.

Go Owls!

The good , the bad and ugly .... ECU game

Our running game is now the best part of our offense and it controls the ball and gives us better chances to pass on play action. This is a huge plus . QB needs to manage the game and let the opportunities come to him

Our defense is wonderful and really has focus . However there were a lot of 50/50 balls thrown by ECU QB and we didn’t make plays . Need more turnovers and take advantage of passes into coverage

12 penalties with most of them procedure or offsides and let a far inferior club stay in the game . We do that against the next three opponents and we will lose plain and simple .

SMU’s Success Starts With the Transfer Portal

This is an interesting comparison to Temple (who has relied on few transfers due to the recruits Rhule brought in). With a lot of players moving on from the defense after this year (and not really sure how Collins recruited), I am hoping Carey and his staff pursue some of these players to help for next year.

Who's the No. 3 back?

On today's American Athletic Conference coaches' call, I asked Rod Carey about the running backs and who the third back might be, especially considering the Owls are coming up on a short week and after Re'Mahn Davis carried the ball 29 times.

Carey did mention that Kyle Dobbins is still in the mix as that third back. After that, he mentioned preferred walk-on Tayvon Ruley and true freshman Ed Saydee from Penn Charter as the next backs up.

We'll have the full audio up later today.
